beautiful, man. congrats on the new toy...let us know how you like it.

btw - that's a nice rack you have there...did you build it yourself? i ask b/c i made one exactly like it - using MDF and 1 inch threads...it's the smartest DIY thing i've done!

is the 6cg7 a new option for the MPX3? how does it compare to the standard tubes for the MPX3? I couldn't find much info at the singlepower site. (eidt: now that I searched the forum, I see that it was a special request that you made. now I really want to hear more of your thoughts on it.

anyways, a very cool setup.

What are the silver bits at the bottom of the tubes? Has it got special tube sockets?

Thanks! The only problem being both my source and amp can now heat up the room rather nicely. Is it winter yet?

I did build the rack. It took me an afternoon to build it after I bought all the materials. The shelves are not painted so I may paint them at some point, though I don't really want to take the thing apart at this point.

No special tubes sockets. As ayt999 mentioned, I special requested Mikhail to have the amp use 6cg7 tubes instead of 6sn7. Those silver bits I beileve are acting as spacers to compensate for the size difference between 6sn7 and 6cg7 tube sockets. Since mpx3 usually comes in 6sn7's, I believe its case comes to Mikhail with holes sized for them.

I'm going to wait till I've had some time to burn in and listen to it before posting any impressions. FYI, mojoman also has a mpx3-6cg7, and he's received his before mine, though I don't know exactly how long he's had his amp.

It looks like the tubes have metal bases. I have never seen a 6cg7 with a base though.

Edit: I was posting when Haj gave us the explanation. I like the spacers look. I have a new mpx3-6cg7 coming this week. I always thought the 6cg7 tube might be a better match with the mpx3. Thats how I ended up with the prototype amp. Mikhail put the solen stage 2 upgrade and paper-in-oil caps in mine; I cant wait.

The more I look at this amp the better I like it. Those silver spacers make it look even classier than usual.

Congratulations! Tell us more about the sound when you get a chance.

I have been listening to my HD-650''s with Moon Audio's Silver Dragon Cable through my New[3 weeks old] MPX3 with upgraded caps and Sylvania VT-231 tubes. It is a nice improvement from the Wheatfield HA-1.

Hey I've seen that amp somewhere before.

Actually, mine is configured with a second set of inputs with a selector switch on the front face and the solen stage 1 upgrade. I've had the MPX3-6cg7 for two weeks now and with each day I'm more impressed. It's dynamic with a nice forward sound that goes very well with the blues, rock and fusion music I like to listen to. It also excels with acoustic music. I listen to a lot of bluegrass too. You can almost feel the top of an acoustic guitar resonate with this amp. Electric guitar solos are dynamic and exciting with a very nice bite to them. Bass is deep and powerful. It's detailed without being analytical. The mid range is amazing! I think I like it.

The first week I used the EI stock tubes. These tubes are very nice and of the tubes I've tried so far a trio of these are the most open and airy sounding. The tube set that I'm using right now is an RCA Cryo'd Cleartop in the driver position and two Cleartops as output tubes. The cryo'd cleartop adds some additional detail and little more sparkle on the top end. The regular cleartops give the sound a powerful bottom end. I guess the thing I like the most about this amp is it's amazing tone. It just sucks you into the music with this most intoxicating sound.

I've haven't heard a MPX3 with 6sn7 tubes. That would be an interesting comparison but I don't know that I could be any happier then I am with this 6cg7 version.

I have to put in a plug for Mikhail here. I had originally ordered a PPX3 and asked if the additional inputs and selector switch could be added. Mikhail said yes but it would take a few weeks because the case needed modification for the additional inputs and switch. When the day came for the amp to be ready Mikhail called and said that the switch did not fit on the front face due to the smaller chassis and it was mounted on the top near the driver tube and was a little hard to change position. The amp worked fine but Mikhail wanted me to be happy with it so he offered to upgrade the PPX3 to an MPX3 for no additional charge. He offered to configure it with the 6cg7 tubes if I wanted. I considered this offer for 3.2 nano seconds and said go ahead. Customer service by which all customer service will be measured.

hopefully it isn't as bad as my Blue Hawaii... it alone registers around a 170W draw on a PS Audio P300.

The mpx3-6cg7 is the same price as the std mpx3 that uses 6sn7 tubes($775). The main difference between the mpx3-6cg7 and the ppx3 with its std 6cg7 tubes is the power supply. The ppx3 has a smaller unregulated power supply while the mpx3 has a large regulated supply. Those two large, recessed power supply caps you see next to the transformer cover in the mpx3 picture give quite a bit more capacitance. The ppx3 has smaller internal power supply caps. The circuits are silghtly different themselves and the mpx3 also has more power filtration to block any noise and the power transformer itself is larger in the mpx3.

I havent heard the mpx3-6cg7 yet so I cant comment on the sound characteristics vs the ppx3. But when I do I will post my opinions. If you want more info go to the temporary singlepower website.
