MP3 CDP w/ good quality headphone out

I'm currently using a Soul DMP-01 as a portable (Basically an iRiver iMP-100), and I recall someone mentioning the 'smiley-face' equalization on iRiver players... well, I notice it too, and have for a while. I need something better in the SQ department, and preferably something with better battery life and skip protection. I'm not looking for an exceptionally powerful headphone/line out, since I can and probably will add a portable amp (go-vibe) at a later date. What are my options?

Well, I wouldn't like to spend TOO much... the less money I can get away with spending, the better. However, if this means sacrificing too much in the quality department, I'll spend more. Let's say a max of ~$150 or so.

i wouldnt be hesitate to check out the newer sony dne line such as the: dne1, dne900, and dne10.

Over here in Asia I bought a D-NE700 for $90. Has a line out, isn't too bulky, and the only differences are thickness, it takes AA batteries, doesn't have optical out or a backlit remote. Pretty good if you ask me. I dunno if they're avaliable state side, though.
