I'm hoping someone can give me some input here. First I'll admit I'm no experienced audiophile. I have some decent budget equipment, I buy everything based off reviews from this forum... something might sound good to me even if it's mediocre, but I try to buy stuff others have proven good so I am not missing out.
Anyway, I gave my HTC m9 to my girlfriend to replace her old iPhone 5 and now I'm using a beat up moto x 2014. Since I never heard anything good about its sound quality I didn't want to use it for music. Even when I resorted to using it and it sounded decent to me, I assumed it's my lack of experience that made it sound okay. So I sometimes bring along an iPod touch 3g which should sound a lot better. It does sound good, but not a lot better. Anyway, the battery was dying on it and requires soldering to replace (good job Apple) and power button is dead so I got a fiio USB DAC from a member on here. It works well with uapp but playing through Google play music something is wrong....can't find any clues on here but the sound is terrible even with my ears. Seems like it's congested with no soundstage. I unplug it and plug my grado sr60 directly into the headphone jack and all of us a suddenit sounds amazing again even though I think it shouldn't.
It sounds so good to me that I'm wondering if Android 6.0.1 or the CM13 based rom (Resurrection remix) that I am running improved sound from the KitKat firmware the phone launched with? I can't find anyone saying anything regarding sound quality on this with the latest software since everyone here moved on to the newest thing.
I know people will say that if it sounds good to me that's all that matters, ignorance is bliss, etc. But I'd really like to know if it's just me or if it's actually any good?
Anyone have one lying around they can try on the latest update?
