im thinking of using my motherboard spdif out, although its AC97 will there be less general crappyness assosiated with AC97 because im using the digital out as opposed to the analog outs...

Onboad sonundcards suck!. Noise, and bad sound. Get a cheap AV710, and you'll have a nice, clean, perfect optical out.
