I havent' heard too many cans, but I own the ER4S's and they are pretty damn detailed. Mention them anywhere in this forum and I'm sure someone will end up saying that too. My vote goes to the ER4S's

I have read the impressions of lots of folks who have owned the Omega II's and the Ety 4 series and state Ety's have more microresolution. So perhaps there is your answer? For close mic'd piano...you should have no other than the 4's.

Actually it does bass very well, fast accurate. Since a piano is not an upright double bass nor a pipe organ nor a timpani, I'm certain he will find that the mid range will be accurate and highly resolving, and what low end he hears will be spot on. If he needs an elevated bass, he can go with the 4P's. But then, what do I know...I've only owned them for 2 years, but I guess some folks have taste and don't want blaring boomy bass.

I suppose it depends on you and the price of the unit. In the first instance, it may have a warranty which may appeal to you. In the second instance the price may be cheaper and/or the phone practically new. Know that reconditioned units are usually brought up to spec...so they are in essense new.
