Most people will say the Sennheiser MX-500 is the best choice for cheap, good sounding earbuds. Just ask MacDEF for a reccomendation and you'll be sold.
I believe they are available at amazon.com for something like 19.99, US.
Do a search on earbuds on you'll find a wealth of info on them.
Nope, the MDR-ED228LP isn't very good. Judging by a pair of the MDR-ED238LP that I own, expect muffled sound with thick, boomy bass from the Groove series of earbuds.
It strikes me that Sennheiser (MX400/500) is the only half decent manufacturer of in-ear 'phones of late...
Philips, Panasonic, Vivanco, and in the most part Sony are all guilty of selling anemic, bass light (clipping), unatural midrange producing 'phones... very disappointing
Headphone Hussy (will wear anything if it sounds good)

The title of "best earbud" is generally a battle between the Senn MX 500 and the Sony MDR-E888. I personally prefer the MX 500 but some prefer the Sony.
However, given that these are both so highly regarded, and the Senns are available for around $15-$17 (vs. $60 for the 888), to me the MX 500 are clearly the "best bang for the buck earbud."
