Drew, hopefully you don't mind this off-topic question here.
I understand that the "best pre-amp is no pre-amp" concept, but I don't fully understand how a passive unit works in a system. What I mean is - I fully understand what is does, but not how it can be implemented in to a system.
Is there a certain type of source or some type of amplification done before the passive to get the voltage high enough for the pre-amp to not need to add any "oomph" before it goes off to the amplifier?
I would love to build a pre-amp, but if I stuck it in between say... my Squeezebox and my Emotiva RPA-1 amplifier, will I be able to go from mute to full volume with a passive? (not utilizing the volume on the SB3, let's say it's fixed to full out for this conversation)
Thank you - and very classy design on your particular unit!
