Modwright, or Musical Fidelity A324 DAC

I don't think Modwright will mod the 555ES.

Talk to Richard Kern. make sure you get the clock mod in addition to the standard mods.

from what i keep hearing, i bet the musical fidelity would be much more of an improvement than a few mods. i haven't heard either though, this is based only on what i have read.

I love the Musical Fidelity DAC and think it is the best for the price.I use it with two Sony 400 disc players linked together. It took me a while to get accustomed to the strange dynamics of the soundstage after my Dad pointed it out to me.I later found that most British DACs and CDPs have the same type of soundstaging.I have talked with a few dealer friends about this and they say it is to accomodate the placement of speakers close to walls, which a lot of British audio consumers seem to do.It does'nt affect headphone dynamics much but can certainly be heard on loudspeaker playback. It's one of those things that is hard to ignore once you have noticed it.That said i still think the MF is an outstanding DAC and I'm sure you guys are sick of hearing me say that Upsampling is the saviour of Redbook CD.

Tough question. Having previously used a MSB Link DAC modded by Dan Wright, and having briefly heard a MF A3.2 cdp, my guess is the modded 555 and MF DAC would be very close in performance. I would probably go the 555 mods route, since that would mean one less box and cable to deal w/.
