Just bought a Ferguson DAB radio, which has a loud annoying hum - I think it is mains hum. Rather than take it back to the shop I am thinking of delving into the depths and bypassing the built in power supply with a wall wart which I have. I like the radio, and I am fairly convinced it's a problem with all these units (I did take the first back).

Thing is, is this a straightforward job? I have a multimeter & soldering iron but limited experience. Quite like the idea of starting to mod though.

Any advice would be appreciated before I void my warranty.

Depends on how exactly the PSU is connected to the rest of the stuff.
If it has a separate pcb, piece of cake. Otherwise (if theres only one pcb) you could just desolder the regulator in the PSU and use the holes to attach your own psu to it. This just requires identifying and desoldering the regulator chip, so not much more complicated.

But do you really want to use some wallwart? Are you sure it will perform better? Most straightforward solution would be to just implement a TREAD regulated power supply (well, basically just a LM317 reference implementation). Then you'd be sure that you have some decent regulation

Thanks for the reply - as I didn't understand a word of your second paragraph, I think I understand my modding abilities - which are none. So I think I will take it back.
