Modifying a SinglePower MPX3 Power Supply

May 8, 2008 at 5:11 PM Post #16 of 22
I have saved your e-mail address and probably by mid June when I get back from Croatia and Greece (and hopefully have this 6922 preamp quited down) I will focus on the SP again. I can't afford to buy more equipment or tubes anyway.

Over on the head amp i asked for any pictures people might have of the inside of their MPX3s so I know what to expect.

Thanks again

This is a mildly upgraded MPX3 that I serviced last year.

first off, and i probably should have said it before: i am inclined towards using smaller caps when possible in tube amps. This is my prejudice. it is based on some stuff i have built and may also be biased by my average listening levels which are on par with an average conversation.

i would have gone for the smaller caps and done something else. i dunno if you upgraded the cathode caps, but thats a HUGE difference.

FWIW, my supra has 3300uf caps

the thing NEVER runs out of steam.

Yes! blackgates for the cathode caps and the bypass caps. Then V-Caps for the coupling caps.

Please don't bite my head off, but are the coupling caps the bigger 2 red ones that are 90 degrees to each other. What are the two little red ones side by side?

Please point out the cathode caps and the bypass caps?

What are C50-C53 and C56 on the lower left?

Pardon my ignorance, and thanks for helping me.

That is an old picture, it does not have the V-Caps, nor the BlackGates for the cathode caps. If memory serves me right the bypass caps are C102.

When the amp returns I will take another picture and post it with annotations.
