Hello all I'm a pretty big noob around here but i am tying to learn and the way i learn best is doing, so... i want to modify my Senn HD202. my idea is to do a kramer mod and cut out the back of the phone to make it open. my question before i start cutting is

what will each of these do?

has anyone done this?

would you recommend it?

any other thoughts or advice before i start hacking???

I would only do that too the headphone if you had real problems with it or if you are on a fact finding mission. Adding holes to the back will change the mechanical dampening of the driver changing the bass response of the phones among other things. I haven't opened a closed can but who knows maybe thats what the cans need.

My experience in those kinds of mods is that usually it's a push pull kind of thing where you can gain a bit of something here but maybe loose some other aspect in the trade. Great way to gain knowledge of how things work, just be careful to change one variable at a time so you know what does what. Also calibrate your expectations, the design decisions on the original vary rarely were made by accident. Oh and have fun.

how very sage like JadeEast. i think what im going to do is find some cheap full cans from jensen or something and fiddle with those. see what changes i can make. what does what. whether i can hear the difference. im a skeptic, the whole cable thing is (shields face from flaming) beyond me. i do respect balanced vs. mini but o2 free copper or silver, i don't see it. my favorite is putting a piece of nylon over the driver to make it a different sound sig. i am in no way saying that it doesn't make a difference but its hard to imagine it doing so.

i guess i don't have the audiophile ear

ok here are my results. i opened up the phones and found a small black plastic disc with a hole in it covering a bigger hole. so i removed it on one side and reassembled and listened. the "opened" side was much more boomy bassy. while the other end sounds a little less bass but tighter maybe. i dunno what i should do. HD202 owners unite. try this and tell me what you think
