Any recommendations? I'm not going to only use the cans but want to use them as a complement to hear all the details in the mixes. I've been thinking about the Grados because of their detailed sound, but I've heard people recommend the Sennheiser HD 580 or 600 for mixing and mastering. What do you all think?

I would recommend you use a couple different pairs of headphones so you have more than one reference. I really like the HD280 Pros, but most studios use the Sony V6/7506 and or AKG 240 M or DF.

You might want to consider either the HD580, HD600, HD650, HD555, or HD595 for a high quality mastering situation. They'll provide detail that grado's only dream of providing. Also just because most studios use the Sony MDR-V6/7506 and the AKG K240M/DF, doesn't mean you should. My "old homage" applies very well to this situation: "People like and use ****." Good luck with your headphone decision!!

I would think the 595 would be a better choice than the 580/600/650 for studio mixing (that's what I'm using mine for). It has more of an upfront sound and is readily powered by studio mixing consoles.

The HD 25-1s are also a good choice if you need isolation. I just picked up a pair of these last week and they were everything I expected.

Sony MDR-CD900ST, available at AudioCubes.
I'll seriously recommend it if you are considering detailed phone. It's like V6/7506 except it doesn't have mid bass boom nor mid high hump, thus making this phone quite clear, detailed and forwarded.

(But it seems like I'm the only one talking about it.)

AKG k271 Studio strikes a good balance between revealing nature and long term listeneability. It's not the most revealing (HFI-650 is much better, imho), but one can listen to them for longer both in terms of physical comfort and lack of listening fatigue.

Also, they have a self-muting feature which can be really useful in some feedback inducing recording environments.

The isolation is not the greatest (again HFI-650 is a hair batter, imho), but pretty ok for closed circumaural headphone.

What a bunch of BS! studios use these because they accurately portray the qualities of the recording not because the studios can not afford something more Audiophile approved but because they let the recording engineers get there work done and that’s the Bottom Line.

yeah i agree with ppl .. in the fact that they fulfill their duties in revealing the flaws in the recording more than any other phone, i own senn580s, and occasionally off hand borrow a friends hd600, hd650 phones, and the sony phones although not really my tastes for extended listening are more revealing and have more clarity than the senns and grado phones. Btw violetta if you drop by the meet were having on August 14th .. ill show you what i mean.
