So I pull into the parking lot of my local Starbucks and this white van comes up behind me. There are two guys in the front seats. One leans his head out the window and says, "Hey you wanna buy some speakers or a home theatre?" Being a wannabe audiophile this perked up my ears, and I say "How much?" and so he says "I'll show you" and they park next to me.

Now, I was a little wary, the fact being that they're in a white van asking if I wanna buy something expensive out of the trunk, but it was lunchtime at one of the most crowded parking lots in the city, so I figure I'm pretty safe. I had my Leatherman in my pocket, anyway ..

So they give me their story that they work at so-and-so store and they have a pair of surplus speakers and two home theatre sets that they have a chance to sell for their own pocket money, but if they go back to work and they still have 'em, the stuff goes back into stock.

They showed me both of the items in a magazine - the home theatre (5.1, amp, and DVD player) was listed for about $2,300, and the speakers were $900 a pair (which means you could really get the speakers for about $600 right?. I can't remember the brand of the HT, but the speakers were something like BMT. They were black, between four and four-and-a-half feet tall. Each had four cones, two woofers, a tweeter, and a super-tweeter? I honestly can't remember exactly.

Anyway, they opened 'em up and showed me and they looked clean and functional. They wanted $600 for the pair (I didn't consider the HT because it was so expensive) of speakers, but I told them the most I could give them was $200. They almost agreed, but I backed out at the last minute saying I'd have to buy a receiver. As soon as I left, I regretted it. Did I miss out on the opportunity to make $400 or $500 reselling those?

Now, I realize these guys could've stolen that stuff, but they had about 3 more pairs of those speakers in the back, and said those weren't for sale because they had to go back to the store, which made them seem more legit.

Any thoughts? I'd like to have other people's opinions. Also, anyone know what brand the speakers might've been? I'd recognize them if I saw them again. I have a horrible short-term memory ..

sometimes I'll get up to go do something and when I get to the room where I had to do it, I'll either forget and go back to where I was or see something else to do and go do it, and then remember what I originally got up to do an hour or so later.

Holy schinazzle, that's exactly what happened, even the beer money .. I guess it's a good thing I went with my gut feeling. Thanks Rick!

EDIT: So what, the stuff doesn't work at all?

Reports vary on the speaker quality (or lack of). Generally, it's just cheap crap. Again, the stories are all over the web.

If I understood it right Dahlton speakers are crap. If so it is funny/sad seeing people try to unload them off to others on ebay.

Ah man, the White Van speaker salesmen

A yeear ago, I got a call from my teammate asking me if these certain brand of speakers were "Ok". I had no clue what he was talking about, as I've never heard of the brand in my life. So, he continued to tell me the story about how these dudes in a white van sold him these awesome speakers for cheap. He paid them in cash right then and there!

The funny part is, he still has the speakers and they are working fine. Now, I did have to work on keeping a straight face when I was listening to them...

Complete and utter crap. White Van Speakers are infamous- check out Dogg Digital on Ebay. Same junk. When they print the price on the box it should raise some warning flags.

I emailed they guy asking if the scam with his speakers is true. I'm guessing he won't answer.

I also emailed two others with the same question. Hopfully I also saved a bidder. I'm on a crusade to save the innocent or I have nothing else to do.

i cannot at all fathom how anybody could possibly be gullible enough to fall for this...

i mean, you're conducting business with guys selling stuff from a van.

you're paying 200$+ for merchandise--regardless of name, quality, scam or not--without any receipt/proof of payment, guarantee, or warranty.

how this isnt an INSTANT red flag to people bemuses me

Call me whacked but them being “crooks” doesn’t justify him stealing the speakers. He said he liked the speakers so to him he got a good deal for $100.

4 pieces of crap still don’t amount to anything but a pile of crap.

Just let these people go on with their business. If anything write down the license plate numbers and report them to the police and No I wouldn’t do anything like he did. There’s too many whacko’s out there to be doing that kind of chit.

A kinder, gentler Mitch
