I'm sure it all depends on the guts but how good is an amp like this one PenguinAmp.com - ? they would be going with a pair of akg k701 headphones. I am very new to this and a friend of mine makes mint tin amps about that quality and offered to make me one for cost. does anyone know any other sites with mint tin amps, or have any suggestions on what would go better with my headphones. thanks

Depends on the opamp used (and other things like output impedence, etc). You should do some more research to determine which opamps complement a K701 the best, and how much power an amp needs to drive them. Ask an owner, they should know. Here are some cmoy alternatives to the penguin amp.

BSG cmoy

CSG cmoy

Eclipse cmoys (note the different opamp options)

I'm in the middle of edumacating myself for my first CMOY build and hadn't seen the PenguinAmps until just now. Wow! Talk about a clean build.

addition: The wemakeamp/Eclipse cmoy is nice too!!! (noted by roxxor)

Sadly I haven't, but many here have. I highly recommend you pm a K701 owner that uses small desktop or portable amps, and ask them whether or not a well designed cmoy can drive it. Also, the "search" feature on this forum is uber useful...

Has anyone used these with the q-jays? I'm looking for a cMoy style amp to go with them and an iPod.
