I know there are minidisc players and recorders, and when I went to websites explaining the difference, all they said was that Minidisc players could only play, and Minidisc recorders could play and record. Does this mean that Minidisc players don't have a jack to transfer music to the disc, or does it mean that Minidisc players don't have on-the-fly recording?

quite simply, MD recorders can record from petty much anything, players from nothing at all. you'll need a recorder, either a portable one or a hifi component type one. if you get a portable recorder, you won't need a seperate playback unit.
