does this combination make sense? i know the grado/alessandro line has an upfront sound and from what i read about the minibox-e+ (comparison with mini^3) it has a good soundstage so would these two not compliment eachother? i listen to mostly classic rock btw

Nope. I really like the MiniBox-E+ without any of those settings on, due to the seeming neutrality, accuracy, and lack of colorations. My main portable set-up as of today is the iPod Nano -> MiniBox-E+ -> ATH-ESW9. The MS1 sounds very nice also though.

I have and like this combo but it's not your only choice. My MS1s sound fine straight from my Nano 2G and I wouldn't write off Garys PA2V2 $60 (tiny with built in charger) amp which has a reputation of sounding fine with Grados which are not hard to amp. I have the PA2V2 and while I don't listen to it much, I'm happy I have it because, unlike the tiny MB-E+, it's both good AND cheap.
