I'm not sure what version of MG Head do you have since you said "MG Head DT/OTL" in your profile. If it's DT version, I recommend you to do the "wing mod". The different between high and low Z selector was a lot more apparent. I could use MG Head with Low Z phones only after I did this mod. It's like getting a new amp. I miss my MG Head

Yeah but mine was even better, as I already owned an HD600......to sell both the MGHead and the HD600 what do you think? these are a way toooooo polite for me, and get an amp for this real kicking ass headphone, I was looking now for an amp for the CD3000, sorry I already tried what you are enjoing now, and I decided that is not my setup......
I tried Grado RS-1's with MG Head/OTL. They sounded great. The tubes took the edge off the vocals that was there with the RA-1 amp. I only used this combo for a short time though, ultimately settling on HD600's. I prefered the soundstage of the HD600's and they were more comfortable. One thing I did notice is that the base did not have quite the impact with the Grado's and ASL amp. I'm not sure what the impedance "mismatch," is there is one, would do. Also, by the time you tuberoll a while with the ASL, your getting into Wheatfield HA-1 territory, and I've heard that amp works well with Grado's.

Grados has nothing to do with the CD3000 then, but the similar impedance, they are not driven the same way by the same amps, with the MGHead the CD3000 and other Sony's sound horrible, Inever tried a Grado, but headfiers reported not to be a heaven match...
No, definitely not a match made in heaven, which is why I mentioned the Wheatfield amp, which is not much more expensive than the ASL with NOS tubes. I'm not sure which Grado's were talking about driving here, and I've never tried the Sony's, but if I had kept my Grado's I would have sold the my ASL amp for something else.

Just a copy of a part of the review from the Headroom page....the Wheatfield HA-1 the only they sell now, is not design for low impedance cans in any way!!!!!!
"............For the sake of comparison, I did test the HA-1 with two other pair of headphones. My Sennheiser HD 545, a beautiful sounding set in normal circumstances, quickly reached it's limit with the HA-1. You could actually hear the 545 simply running out of juice, attempting to reproduce the range of sound created by the HA-1. My Sony CD-1700, a terrific high quality closed-ear pair of headphones, just didn't marry well with the HA-1 at all. I am assuming this is due to the CD-1700's very low impedance, but they produced a very audible hum when listening, so I quit my test immediately............."
I'll admit, I don't have experience with the Wheatfield, but when I mentioned to them (Headwize) that I was trying Grado RS-1's with an ASL tube amp, they suggested that the Wheatfield would do a better job with the low impedance. I guess I didn't read between the lines that perhaps neither of these amps are particularly suited to low impedance cans. I did not, however, hear any hum from the MG Head while listening through the Grado's.
I would be curious what might be a good amp for the RS-1 if one wanted tubes. Perhaps the RKV with impedancer (big bucks though)?
