Just received an ASL MG Head OTL from a fellow Head-Fi'er today but there seems to be a bit of a problem. There wasn't a problem before shipment and the amp was packaged and secured very well.

I'm getting a loud hum/buzzing sound from both channels. It also sounds as if the sound is not fully represented - I'm not sure if this is because the hum/buzz is overpowering the music or if the problem lies in what is causing the hum/buzzing noise.

I have two pairs of EL84 tubes, JJ's and EI's, and have tried both of them with the same results. I have one GE 5751 tube that I suspect is the problem. I have opened up the amp and checked for any loose connections, but did not see any. I have also tried different power outlets around the house as well as hooked the unit up to a surge protector.

My signal chain looks like this:
AMC CD8b -> AudioQuest Copperhead IC's -> MG Head OTL -> Senn HD600's

Any suggestions? Thanks for any help!

Justin

Thanks Nick! I think I did everything else but listen to the unit by itself. Turns out the AudioQuest Copperhead IC's are the problem. Put in some cheap patch cables and noises disappeared! That was quick.

Now, what kind of interconnects do you owners of the MG Head use? Suggestions?

Thanks once again!
Justin
