I have been looking into these disc's. The General feeling is that most Have better sound quality than the original.

Anyway I have noticed that the disc's from Japan sell for more money. Is this because they are better quality, Better mixed or just harder to get hold of.

Yeah MSFL paid (pays) really good attention to their mastering and has really good engineers. A lot of normal cds are are compressed to play louder and what not they I think don't do such compression. So yeah they sound better.. dunno about the Japan ones per se, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were higher quality.

On a side note anyone have an idea where a good source in locating OOP ones besides Ebay? Or is Ebay the way to go. What about currently availabe ones? I would imagine fake copies is an issue.

I've been looking on e-bay it seems to be the main place. Found the odd one in stores online. The mofi website seems to be down at the minute to buy the latest releases.

Has anybody ended up buying fakes ?

The original Japan UD1 CDs are desired by collectors for their rarity. However, there are people who insist the original Japanese UD1s tend to sound better than the later USA UD2s, even though they are bit identical. In general, the early Japan pressed CDs are of higher quality than later USA pressings, this applies to any CD, not just MFSLs.

While I have not made a study of UD1s vs. UD2s I am sympathetic to the idea that different pressings of the same material can sound different. I have shown that different pressings of the same material have different measurable error rates. I firmly believe the quality of the pressing is audible and makes a difference, but that puts me on the esoteric side of the argument.

Also, unless you have really high-end equipment, don't expect to hear differences between different pressings, we're talking about very very small, subtle changes. So, don't sweat it, and go for the cheaper USA UD2s.

Whle the MFSL Gold disc are indeed audio gems, another that is well up there in SQ as well is TELARC Digital. They are pure DDD digital with absolutely NO Compression.

Matter of fact they even include a warning about the possibility of equipment damage if played too loud as the dynamic range is uncompressed and exceeds "normal" cd's by a decent margin.

I have yet to be disappointed by any of the ones I have, and compared to MFSL they are bargain-priced.

Thanks for the TELARC tip. It's not my usual type of music but after reading a couple of reviews I think I will give one a go.

Just hope I don't end up with " Pieces of woofer all over my lounge " as one reviewer mentions !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL, simply turn the volume DOWN before pressing play

also, while the majority of ther catalog is classical, they do feature sme really good Blues and Jazz artists too!

My brother-in-law gave us the Telarc "Time Warp" disc when we got our first CD player to show us how resolving and dynamic the medium could be. While it wasn't my favorite genre, I still listen to it simply because it is awe-inspiring.

Yes,I buy Telarc discs sometimes even when I'm not really sure I want to hear the music. Usually, I enjoy it, and always the sound is good (exceptions from their usual ultra-high quality are live recordings). MFSL, of course, strives for the same; but they, as mastering engineers who go back at already recorded material, can only do so much. Some recordngs are just less bad on MFSL. Nirvana comes to mind...a decently recorded standard release and a somewhat better but not great MFSL.
