A.) Lets get started.

1.) Box : unimpressive...cardboard.......Yawn.

2.) Carrying Case : Modestly impressive, along the lines of the recent Abyss Diana cases.

3.) Build Quality of the : POET. .... Is good.. The Headstrap system is somewhat similar to the Dan Clark design, and the Earcup Sliders that control the positioning of the cups are typical of the better Meze gear.

4.) Pads : Soft, comfortable, similar to the Liric, but softer.

5.) Cable : The cable is excellent Meze quality, but useless overall.. As noone who buys a $2000.00 USD set of headphones is going to waste time with a SE cable, if they understand anything about listening to higher-end headphones at home.
Audiophiles use BALANCED cables at home for more delivery power, and a slight widening of the overall soundstage.
I appreciate that Meze is trying not to encroach upon their Top Tier $$$$$$$$ Headphones with this new POET, so they did a few things with the POET to make sure that didnt happen... like only supplying a SE cable, and giving the POET's frame a color scheme that isn't actually attractive, as dull silver grey does not really work that well aesthetically with the color bronze.

So, the supplied cable is great quality, but thats a hard pass in this case scenario, and the color of the headphones is designed to be semi-attractive at best, (and im being polite).. so that it does not "compete" with their much more attractive upper tier Model's asthetics.

Now lets get to the POET's sound, as if the sound isn't good... then the color, the cables, the box, the build quality, really doesn't matter.

How do they sound.??

Well, ive not spent even an hour with them and i wanted to come to the Forum and review them for you.

What i immediately noticed regarding the POET's sound is that a fan of the original Empyrean, who still wanted a better sound but very similar, and didnt love the Empy 2's sound, (Me).... is going to be mildly thrilled with the MEZE POET.
In my opinion, MEZE has created the Empyrean JR, complete with the Liric's frame size... and Meze has updated the OG Empy's sound profile inside the POET that includes the reduction of that very full upper bass and recessed midrange that was a part of the OG Empyrean's magic that was not always enjoyed by all listeners.
The MEZE POET, is mostly the Empyrean's sound, updated....and offered in a reduced size and with a nicely dialed in frequency response which allows the POET to sound quite natural , lovely, and lush, and still detailed and sonically balanced and very musical.
The Meze Elite was not a Empyrean sonically updated.... and the Empy 2, was not what i wanted as an updated Empyrean.
The POET, by MEZE... is seeking to be the best Empyrean of all, in a smaller size.....and it has 92% accomplished this goal.
This Meze POET is a very fine sounding gear.

Imagine if you combined the ZMF Atrium with the Meze Empyrean , and added a dash of midrange and enough resolution and detail retrieval and instrument separation to make the POET sing.

A.) Your imagination has been 91% accomplished as the : MEZE POET.

Now, for the last few days, ive been listening to the OG Susvara, and nothing else.

And when i initially put on the Meze POET, and started listening, i never had the thought..>"where is all the detail".. "where is all the resolution".... ..and that is because the POET has plenty on tap, and available.
Now i didnt say that the POET has the Detail of the Susvara, or of say a Warwick Bravura... as it doesn't but neither does anything else.
However the POET has been engineered sound-wise to have a beautiful and nicely detailed sound.

A.) Mission Accomplished

So,....MEZE has designed their POET to sounds SO good, = most of all regarding their prime directive...and you also get plenty of detail retrieval. Its quite a perfect balance.
The POET's sound is sweet, somewhat lush, somewhat warm, and has nice detail, but never does it try to take the music apart, or become a set of audiophile microscopes on your ears.

So for my money, the best 2 new Headphones ive heard in the last 15 months are the Hifiman ARYA Unveiled, and the MEZE POET. I give the Abyss JOAL a highly rated 3rd position, as long as you use the Leather Pads, non-Bass ported.

Both the MEZE POET and the HIFIMAN ARYA sound terrific.
Absolutely.

-------------------------

1.) Treble : Somewhat energetic but not sibilant. Never too sharp, yet not rolled off. There is a mild similarity here to the OG Empyrean.

2.) Midrange : Beautiful analytical detail and fullness.

3.) Bass : Goes deep, has nice texture, and is quite full.... and (mostly) balances nicely with the Mids and Treble. Not a Bass Canon, but definitely not Bass shy.

4.) Soundstage : Its amply wide... has more L<>R than "out front" and the overall depth is above average for a smaller Cup sized set of headphones.

5.) Instrument Separation : Fantastic.

6.) Timbre' : Empyrean Likeness.

Final Analysis: I prefer the POET over the 3 most recent MEZE's..

The outstanding sound of the Poet, is certainly FR positioned right along side MEZE's "top tier" headphones.

Below, in the last photo...I posted the MEZE POET along side the Susvara and the OG Empyrean, and the Warwick Bravura, so that you can evaluate the size of this new Meze.

Hey! You said that your best songs were Meze Poet and Arya Unveiled, which one is better?
:beerchug:

That answer depends on what you like to hear.

So, they are co-equal, regarding being outstanding..

The Poet has a more impressive design, and build, and the Hifiman is less expensive and looks great in person.

Both of these products make music sound good.......so, in that regard they both are exceptional.

Get both., as both are fantastic.

Thanks for the review! As an Empyrean OG owner who also disliked the Empyrean 2 I'm intrigued to try the Poet. Seems like there are conflicting opinions on the width of the soundstage so I definitely need to demo first

And while I understand you may prefer a balanced cable, I'm sure I'm not the only person who uses a SE cable with not only my $2k headphones but even with those in the $4k range. 😀

I take offense to this as I enjoy both balanced and SE on both my Elites and Nutopias

If you are using a SE cable then in most cases you are not using all the power that your Amp has to offer your Headphones, and you are losing a percentage of Sound-Staging.. including instrument separation.
Now some Amps (headphone amps) only offer a SE out, such as the Schiit Pietus Maximus. so, in this case, its all good..
In Fact.. if there is a Susvara owner here, who wants to make your Susy perform.. then get this Amp with the ESS9028 DAC... As it plays very well with a Susvara.
But Most Dac-Amps with power.. are not producing their Maxx output, into the SE.........so, check your amp as you may be missing out on its best output solution.

The POET does not have the width of soundstage that is offered by the OG Empyrean.
The POET's SS is effectively wide.......and by that i mean .. its designed to offer what it does, as a Sound Signature, within a smaller field.
But that does not mean it has a small soundstage..........as its good, but its not HD800S good.....
The POET is more intimate in its presentation, yet its not a inside your head as you find with the HD600 or something like the Abyss Diana v1 & 2.

Thanks for additional comments on the soundstage!

Regarding my amps- my Pass HPA-1 is only SE. I also have a Luxman with both balanced and SE which I use from time to time but I prefer the Pass.

Why do you prefer the Pass, vs the Luxman? And is this regarding all your headphones, or just your daily drivers?

And, i mentioned using the Schiit SE P-Maximus, with the Susvara.........and ive used the Susy's with the Jot 2, (balanced out) that has more Watts.
The Maximus play the Susy's much better through its SE, with less watts then the JOT 2 plays the Susy's using the Balanced out.
This is one of those "best case scenarios" for a specific Headphone as the Susy sounds exceptional on the Pietus Maximus, using the SE, and it only sound good using the JOT 2's more power balanced out. And both have the same ESS9028 Dac.

Great review man!
May I ask: is the Poet more technical than og Empy?( detail, resulution, etc.) Which one is the better headphone overall? Or are they different enough to get both?

The Poet reduces the upper bass as compared to the Empyrean OG......so, what that means is...

A Headphone can have excellent mids and treble, yet because of a certain lower frequency that is too abundant.... you then perceive that the mids and treble are not extended.
This is very common, whereby some part of the FR is over-cooked, and your ears then perceive that the other parts of the FR are not correct, when in fact, they are... but because of the FR imbalance, you perceive it as "Has issues".
So, the OG Empy, is a technical headphone....but because of that extended upper bass or lower midrange warmth,.. the ear then perceives that there is less detail and less extension.

The POET remedies this by lowering that upper bass...as compared to the OG Empy....but you do lose some soundstage, and some comfort.......yet you gain clarity, most of all as compared to the OG Empy, and you also maintain a certain rich musicality that is the hallmark of the MEZE sound as related to the Empy OG .

I see! Thank you! I like the extended upper bass on the OG Empy and with the angled alcantara pads, open up the details and even the soundstage. But I think I’d love the Poet clear midrange! Poet must be a midrange and vocal beast! Maybe I get them…my poor wallet!😭

Im a fan of the Empy OG.
I recall that when it was first unveiled it became a Phenom for many months.....longer then any other headphone in recent memory other the the OG Arya and the Susvara.
The OG Arya is dead, and the OG Susvara is still very popular.
The OG Empy, ... well, it was crucified by reviewers.........eventually.....which harmed its desirability...these days.
It is a great sounding gear, but its not created for people who are chasing that very last sonic detail, ....and many reviewers, are basically into this game less then 10yrs, so they are still learning what "good sound" means, so they attacked the Empy, because its not a sonic microscope.

And Yes, if we are going to play in the Audiophile Headphone world, we have to be willing to pay to play.
We are fortunate to belong to a community of listeners who look for good clean used gear, just in case we want to sell ours.
