Meze EMPYREAN - the First Isodynamic Hybrid Array Headphone

Doing some listening with the Empyrean loaner’s now. I’m trying to decide if I should jot some notes down between them and the HEKse’s. I’ve been comparing them mostly with the Audeze 4z’s. Today I pulled out the Diana Phi’s after a week break from and was quickly reminded how good they were. They really made the Empyrean’s sound less resolving than what I thought about them initially. Now that I’ve gotten past the honeymoon period with the Empyrean’s, now it’s time for some critical listening. As my time with them is winding down.

On the other hand, I am very interest to hear your comment on the synergy of Empyrean with the electronics you have in your signature. The Empyrean is fairly potable friendly, so most, if not all, headphone amp or DAC/Amp in your signature should be capable, its a matter of synergy that formulated a high price performance system. :beerchug:

When I compared Empyrean to Woo WA33 and chorde Hugo tt2 the WA33 had bass rumble. This is nice as it gives more of a subwoofer feel.

Hi Andy,

I am noticing how the Empyrean's performance scales up on the different amps I have tried them on. Also, the tone changes quite a bit with the different cables supplied and swapping out ear pads. This leads to a lot of possible sound combinations and displays how transparent the Empyrean's are.

Glad you are enjoying your exploration, a lot of users have amazed by the scalability of Empyrean, but transparency is not a popular topic so far, let's hope your exploration will bring out some new insights to the Empyrean community. :beerchug:

Am expecting a set of adapters in the mail by tomorrow that will allow me to compare the Meze Empyrean and HifiMAN HE-1000SE with the same cable.
Right now I prefer the detail retrieval, transparency and spaciousness of the HE-1000SE with a silver UPOCC cable.
The Meze sound thicker, with more body and dynamic drive, but seem curbed by what sounds [to me] like an excess of [mid] bass energy.

This is how I hear the two as well. They are pretty good at what they do. They are a nice complement to each other.

I agree with your observations, but I would like to add that the Empyrean to me overall has a more enjoyable tuning and tonality than the 1000SE, even with that slight mid-bass emphasis and lesser resolving capabilities. I would prefer a smaller mid-bass emphasis (in favour of a more firm sub-bass presence) and higher resolve, yet to me the choice is obvious because of the Empy's unique tonality and naturalness.

I prefer Sawyer Brown, "Some Girls Do", Brooks and Dunn, "Boot Scootin" Boogie" and Earl Thomas Conley, "Who's Gonna Tell Her Goodbye" with the Empyrean.

The bass seems just right on these tracks.
: )

[4-cores cable, spc x 2/copper x2, with the Meze.]
Might try the HEDDphone cable.

[iFi Defender3, iFi iSilencer3, usb Disruptor, iFi usb iPurfier3, Qutest dac, Meridian Prime headamp and power supply, DakiOm Feedback F-273 Stabilzer, Synergistic Research H.O.T.]

[Truth be told, I preferred the Martin Logan Mikros 90 to all my other headphones on these tracks.]

Just got my Empyrean Copper's from Bonddam today. Couldn't be more happy. I had a very emotional experience with them upon unboxing and taking them for a first listen.

Speaking of scaling and amps im looking for my next purchase which would be a desktop. Im currently driving them with either the DragonFly Cobalt or an iFi Hip-Dac. So far i'm liking the warmth and bass boost from the Hip Dac.

I'm now about 120hours time run on my empys. Most of the time hanging on the stand. So I think brain burn in is reduced.
And oh boi. They are really starting to shine.
They open more and more with every hour. Some people said that empys are somehow similar to AQ nighthawks.
And yup I would agree with that. AQ also needed a lot of burn in time.

I like my empys more and more :)

I was kind of worry when you said "when honey time period has ended". glad to know the Empyrean has get back on track after 100+ hours and is still improving. This is another user user testimonial stating that the Empyrean will benefit by burn in.

Come back and keep us informed after another fortnight of extensive use, we'll looking forward to you update, and hopefully another favorable impression. :beerchug:

The best performance I had was 10 watts of dynamic power on Woo WA33. Of course I asked Woo how much power at 50 ohms and got no real answer. But the Empyrean sub bass was rumble time. So much scale. I sold them but would buy again in the future but this pandemic has to end but there is no expiration on this virus.

Hi Bonddam,

I just bought a PW Audio Vanquish Xerxes hybrid 4.4mm cable to use with my Hip Dac for portable use. Wondering if you liked the black label with the Empyrean as well or if you think it needs tubes?
