Oh man, you are going to stress people out and stir big waves with this post.

The Empyrean I auditioned sounded more refined and detailed than mine but I think that was because of the Dac and amp.

Out of Qutest and Taurus MKII you just can't really get the clarity and refinement of the TT2+MScaler.

I can report back in a few days when my TT2 arrives.

Driver variations at Meze? I doubt it. I guess we just need to wait for @Meze to comment on this.

Yes, it is possible but I am sure that the 2 empyrean are realy différents.
We made before with some members of a reputable headphone and Iems site in France (tellement Nomade) exactly the same tests with 2 Utopia, 2 Hifiman HE1000 V2 and SE and have not founded any differences between these headphone that’s why I am very concerned about our empyrean blind tests. With the Hifiman and Utopia we used the viva egoista or 2 Auris HA2 with the same tubes: no difference. Dac used: idggrasyl and Qutest.

How many hours on the new one? What is the serial number of each one? I wonder how far apart they are
  4. popof94
The new one was realy new: less than 10 hours. I will ask my friend his serial number and will let you know both.

Even if in the end they do sound different, you can’t compare it at 10 hours yet. If you want real apples to apples you got to get about the same amount of hours on it. 200 hours to 1000 hours probably not any different. But 10 hours to 200 hours there’s definitely a difference.

That’s a problem if the new and unburned one sound better for us no?

I guess it depends on your opinion of better. Regardless, I'm just trying to say that you should at least break in the headphone for an accurate comparison.

If they end up being that drastically different, you should contact Meze and tell them, and then have them pay for you to Fedex to them and back to you after they hear it.

That’s sound good. We will make the test again in a few weeks.

Unfortunately, this seems to be a recurring issue with headphones, especially with the most expensive ones... I've been on Headfi long enough to see similar types of comments on HD800, Ether 2, Abyss, Audeze .... and my list is probably not exhaustive. It's a shame when paying 3k+ and not being sure you won't get a "lemon". Manufacturers should burn in their headphones and double check the response curve before sending it out.

Who knows? It might be the same with speakers too, but who has two sets the same speakers in the room to compare them? Also it’s probably more noticeable on headphones since headphones are on your ears and it’s more intimate and you can hear differences more easily.

I'm just going to stick with my Shure SRH1540 headphones out of the balanced output on my Sony DAP.

Bet you couldn't perform that test on Audeze's top headphones.......if so, you would be disappointed quite often! Right @ken6217 ?

Anyway no matter how much to pay.... $3,000, $30,000 or $300,000, no product is perfect. Better than less expensive, hopefully, perfect no.

And they aren't always better than less expensive...

When I got mine it sounded brighter to my ears but with usage it definitely got smoother. It may be you like brighter sound so you find the new one to sound better?
