I picked up a pair of KEF LSX a few months ago for the office... They sound great, but like you, I found they tend toward the clinical and don't sound very natural to me (almost to clean, modern and digital) - still deciding if I am going to keep them - have seen very few reviews that mentioned that - so maybe it is just a preference thing
Try adding a warmer sound DAC to it. I feel it really changed the sound signature better for me. I personally like the ifi house sound and it did the trick for the LSXs. I'm just using the AUX in and I don't feel I lose any quality. Sorry to digress from the 99 thread.

found my active Kef LSX speakers sounded a little too clinical and thin so I added the ifi nano iOne to help balance the sound better. It helped add that body and warmth to the music that was missing before.

KEF LS50 was and still is a great product for its price, but yes, this one also was more clinical than round. And I'm happy that iOne did the trick for you. Although small, it surely doesn't lack body :)

It's still going strong and does everything I need it do. Eventually there might be an iBasso to replace it.

Was actually running the 99 Classics from the Colorfly C3 this morning and it does a very impressive job of powering them with only 16mW of output.

One of the most neutral DAPs from back in the day, excellent sound but featureless and a horrible UI.

Glad to know you are getting better quality with the silver balanced cables. I just ordered one for my 99 Classics to use with the A&K SR25 balanced port. That said, how can you know if the improvement is the cable or the iFi circuit? I always thought balanced circuitry would be the most likely reason for the change in sound and not the cable.
In my xp this... Its all about balanced Circuit not the cable.

Just recently bought the Audio Technica MSR7Bs and going from the Noirs to it, is to put it mildly, quite a change. The Mezes are bass cannons and the sound they exude is nice and meaty where as the Technicas are treble-inclined and therefore detail monsters. To be honest though, I feel the Mezes now, upon being acquainted to the MSR7B's sound, to be a bit too bassy to my liking. Maybe I need to spend more time with the Noirs to get reacquainted again with its sound signature...
