To me the sound signature of Meze 99 classics is quite different to the hd 6xx. The mid ( vocal) of Meze 99c is colored and is so emotional. Meze 99 also has more bass and mid bass. The soundstage is more or less the same. The Meze 99c is for music lovers to enjoy music and not to analyse it!

Yeah, I think you're looking at 2 different animals here, between the 99s and 600.

The new AKG K371 might be your best bet here.

I have the HD600 and the Meze 99 Noir and can assure you they sound nothing alike as others have mentioned. I use the 99 more, just because they are so enjoyable for both music and movies. The comfort and added bass punch from the 99 always makes me smile. I'm a fan of the 99 suspension as well, where anyone can just pick them up and pull down to ear level with no click type adjustments. If your looking for the analytic flatter sound of the HD600 in a closed HP look elsewhere.

There is no closed back for that price that can compare to the HD600 as far as I'm aware, but I think maybe the discontinued Oppo PM-3 or Sennheiser Momentum 2 would be decent. Both have bass and good isolation/low leakage.

EDIT: i haven't heard them myself but as someone mentioned above, the AKG K371 might be a nice option.

I own both, currently. Have had the HD6XX for a little over a year, just got the K371 merely to try them and satisfy my curiosity, and don’t intend on keeping them. There aren’t many closed headphones that sound a lot like the HD650, it’s a one of a kind headphone. But the way I hear it, the K371 isn’t quite as warm. It’s midforward like the Sennheisers though, actually even more so. The upper mids are quite forward and the soundstage is a little more closed in. The K371 has more low bass but less mid bass, and more treble but not quite as resolving.

I do recommend it though because it’s just so inexpensive and it sounds pretty great for the price.

I thought this member was looking for a closed version of the 600 - not the 650. Either way, the 99s aren't the answer.

Sorry you’re right. Then it’s actually probably even closer to the HD600.

I enjoy my Meze MORE than my Senn HD600/650...so I think it could work for you. I like the bass on both.

Not exactly alike the HD600, but for your needs and your buck, you might be happy with the 99.

I like my classics better than the massdrop version of HD600. I use them with radsone ES100 with equalization to dial them in to my preferences... Great combo.

Thanks for all the responses (I asked about the 99s vs HD600). I'll take all those opinions into account, including looking into the K371.

I'm a little surprised though, because in the first 100 pages of this thread (which is as far as I've read so far), all ther opinions & raves of the 99s somehow gave me the impression that these were a great closed choice for fans of the HD600, with the biggest difference being the lows. But I never expected so many to respond to my post saying they're completely different.

Anyway, I'm intrigued enough that I think I'm going to try them. Whether they're like the 600s or not is not really important; I just want something closed that sounds really good, like in the same class as the 600s.

Well, they certainly do sound really good!

Not a night and day difference, but significant enough to not see both these cans as alike.
