Found it amusing that out of a laptop’s headphone jack the headphone sounds thin and dull.

Plug it into a dedicated amp and it comes alive. Too much bass for my taste but with a little EQ it’s sitting pretty. Now I just wish the mids didn’t sound as pushed back as they do. Make them sound hollow.

    Hey man, how goes it.
So weird. I truly don’t hear what you do. But I also basically use these with a dragonfly red through an IPhone 7+ and they sound fantastic. The mids are what shine the most as they’re not to forward, not pushed back fand overall very balanced, especially with the upper mids, lower treble.
The bass, dependent on track, isn’t too much for me at least. What’s funny, wearing glasses actually helps with these headphones more then they deter. That slight break in the seal lets just enough bass out where they’re perfectly balanced for my tastes.
This headphone is so polarizing. More-so then most.
    Hope you’re well!

Yeah, "amusing" is the right word to describe the sensation

It takes very little investment these days to easily beat most laptops' 3,5mm out, which is good.

Finally got to hear one of these when my son and his GF visited yesterday. My son's GF had a pair (light colored wood with white headband and ear pads) so I got to listen to them first from her Galaxy S10 and then on my living room setup. The sound was actually decent from her S10 so unplugged them and connected them to my Ember, WTH, sounded so different and that's when my son's GF says that she uses the EQ on the S10 to change the sound to her liking which involves reducing the bass a lot, boosting the highs and a few tweaks to the mids. On my desktop without any EQ they sounded a bit bad: bloated bass, slightly recessed mids and rolled of highs. At this point I figured these are not my cup of tea, sort of like the M1060 when I think about it.

Got my 99C with Meze balanced cable and Shure 1540 pads on. No bass bloat, mids perfectly balanced along the treble.

These cans respond nicely to EQ and quality hardware. They can sound bassy, but this is easily fixable.

Anyone know what kinds of screws and/or bolts the meze 99's use? I want to get a pair and do some work on the wood cups, mostly for looks, but also some epoxy resin on the outside so they are more durable and have a gloss to them. Thanks in advance.

The problem for me is that I can't use EQ on my main system since I have one source (PC) going to 3 DACs (Modi2uber, Bifrost MB and UD301) and these are fed to 3-4 amps (BH Crack, Ember, Lyr2, Asgard2 and CTH). This is why I have another system (PC) with just my Stax SRD34 since there is a slight channel imbalance but they are still one of my favorites since I modded them to use large over-ear (Hifiman ear pads) versus the stock on-ear ones which cost way too much ($60 iirc), don't last very long, and were not very comfortable.
I'd much prefer the sound of my old Momentum on-ear when I need a closed back headphone since its decent out of my phone (S9, no EQ) and is light and compact for traveling. My son's GF told me she only uses her 99 when traveling and when she needs a closed back but when at home she prefers her open headphones: HD700, T1gen2 and RS2e in addition she also loves my son's HE560 and Ypsilon G1.

Momentums were nice as well, though we lean towards the 99. All good though, none of us has to like everything equally and it's cool that we have so many reasonably priced things available.

One reason I even tried the Momentum (first gen) was that they were discontinued so Amazon used to sell "like new" ones for a tiny fraction of their original cost, $45-$54 iirc so I bought quite a few (7 or 8 I think) and gave them away to friends who were only using the cheap ear buds that came with their phones. Another thing was they came in different colors so women that I gave them to really liked the pink, white and red ones. I had considered the Meze 99 but at that time was still new so they were still quite pricy. My son's GF got her Meze 99 used for $75 from Craig's list but had to get new pads since the existing ones were worn and cracked since she liked the color/style of them but she also noted that the sound leaves a little to be desired at times.

Using the Classics via the headphone socket of an iPad Pro streaming Spotify free at higher rate. Plenty of volume to spare and with some eq reducing bass it sounds very acceptable.
Question is - would sound quality improve much using a Dragonfly amp/dac or upgrading to premium instead?

Man has times changed. This headphone was wowed basically by all when it first came out......then the pad change happened. Such a shame as I think this is an outstanding headphone. But I’m using the original pads.
I use the dragonfly red on a IPhone 7+ With Spotify high rez/premium and it sounds great. It’s a great little Dac with the amp being on the Meh side. The great thing is these HP’s are so easy to drive so it’s all about the DAC on the DFR. This combo sounds great to me but that doesn’t mean it’ll sound great to you. If you think it’s bassy now, it’ll always sound bassy unless you EQ.

Understood. With smiles on our faces we'd snatch a truck of Momentums sold in 'like new' condition for less than $50. That's a nice gesture on your end btw.

Unfortunately for "purists" EQ = Sacrilege!

I am glad Meze decided to (finally) listen to feedback and start selling the original pads again, not only to give the 99 Classics back it's well received sound but to give me some piece of mind knowing that if mine wear out I can buy new ones.

Yes, if I found a pair of Momentums for that low of a price and had a friend in need I'd gladly snatch them up and pay it forward. They are great headphones!

Once we think about how many we spend on audio stuff, something along the lines of Momentum sent to someone in need is a no brainer indeed.
