That does look normal for pads in general (like many of my old AKG and Sony). Sweat, heat, oil, the sun, beard/hair will do that over time, especially if the 99 Cs are your daily drivers. How long have you had them?

Pads are normal wear and tear. Buy new ones.

Good to know. They aren't really my daily drivers. That duty is for the mdr 1am2. I must confess these 99c I have are tad older than a year. I was alarmed as they degraded after 9 months of use and it happened all of a sudden.

Well, they do look like something has accelerated the wear. 9 months does seem somewhat fast. My pads are original and still look new. Currently I have on the large pads which have been on for well over a year and again still look new (I use them 3-4 hours a week). Were they exposed to sunlight for long periods of time?

I suspect it was the harsh summer!

I ordered my balanced cable on the 15th August, checked the status today and they're in Germany, 9 days on and they're not even halfway to me ! I'm impressed with Meze headphones, not so impressed with the speed of their delivery. 17 euro delivery for a 99 euro item as well is excessive. At that price I would have expected them to arrive next day.

Yes, I've managed to fix the problem today. I disassembled it and fixed the issue. Thank you for help. I really appreciate it.

Finally ran into these at a local hi-fi shop. Couldn't stop listening to the demo unit, so I bought a pair.

These are fun without being painful in a way I've never seen anyone pull off before, and they work straight out of Apple's silly headphone dongle. What's not to love?

I'm not even sure how Meze did it. I have the Denon D2000 from forever ago and I feel like they were going for a similar sound, but the Denons never became a daily driver—recessed mids and often painful highs ruined the experience. I also have the ATH M50x—they did become a daily driver but still got painful in the highs. Etymotic ER4XRs are amazing, but they can sound a bit dull at times. (I might be the only one that perceives them as bass monsters with a fair bit of HF rolloff—apparently I hear IEMs weird.)

So far these haven't left me feeling like I'm missing anything. Maybe it's because the bass drops without eating the vocals and I can't bring myself to care about much else. I think they've captured the sound of cruising down the Interstate with the car stereo up, only better.

I'd like to say a passion for sound coupled with great engineering, but I think it's black magic! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Glad you like them, they are amazing cans! Even better with an upgraded OCC cable! :metal::sunglasses:

Do these headphones sound great on laptop or smartphones? Do you NEED a dac/amp for them to sound as fun and acclaimed as everyone says they are?

I listen almost solely on my Galaxy S6 and my laptop. Might be getting the S9 or some other upgrade soon.

I demoed them on an iPhone X with Apple's lightning to 3.5mm adapter and they were good enough to convince me to buy them. My old iPhone SE is also doing fine with them, as is my MacBook Pro.

I don't know your equipment, but these headphones don't seem overly demanding.

Is your climate a cause for this? I do find it surprising... glad Meze is here to help you. This is also a matter that a dealer you buy from could help you with as well, if you purchased from one.
No amp/dad needed to sound great. Out of phone is an easy way I like to show people them!

And they scale just as good, all around 'phone.

It's just a pity that the classic doesn't come in black. Would like one for portable use.
