The local power company here Florida Power and Light offered to hook up a surge protector at the meter outside, advertising as the first line of defense against surges. The catch is they only warranty large appliances not electronics. The installation is free and it cost 8 something a month to rent it. I was wondering if it's worth it or not, seeing as I have surge protectors for my tv, hi-fi equipment, and computers. I searched the net and found this page about the protector they are offering.
