I just built a Meta42 with a 50K Alps pot from tangent and I have to turn the pot to 3 o'clock to get some decent volume out of it. I am not trying to blast it either. My source is a Sony Minidisc player with the volume at full. I am using it with Grado SR-125s. My gain is 10 (I used the values on Tangent's schematic) I thought someone just posted a problem similar to this one, but I couldn't find it with the search function.

Double check your resistors with a meter. Usually problems like this can be solved by checking for careless mistakes.

Did you install a crossfeed?

Listen to the headphones plugged into the same jack on the MD player that you're using for the amp. If it's quiet that way, plug the amp in with the volume turned all the way up -- the music should be a lot louder. If not, or if the MD player sounds louder when powering the headphones directly, your amp has a problem. The resistors are indeed the prime suspect.
