I think thats more for cosmetic reasons than to do with any real mercury risks. Even though there is mercury used in the preparation of the amalgam, it is firmly bonded in the amalgam and it doesnt get into your system. Thats what my dentist said anyway.

As for tuna, the different species of tuna have different quantities present, ie albacore, bluefin, yellowfin etc. The light meat tuna has the least amount of mercury, but an FDA website chart suggests an average 180 pound male not consume more than 3 small cans per week.

I eat a lot of tuna, about 3 cans a week. The only species that is okay to eat that often is skip jack. IIRC for all other species have a recommended intake of 3 cans per month. Albacore is my favourite, but it has the highest level of mercury, and I have no intentions of becoming as mad as a hatter!

Here are some excerpts from a CBC expose on tuna and mercury levels...

"Studies have shown "white" tuna is typically higher in mercury content than "light" tuna, because it's generally a larger, older fish that has accumulated more mercury."

"Safe consumption advice ranges from no more than one can of albacore tuna a week in some jurisdictions to none at all in others."

Finally, see this link http://www.ecocontribution.com/Tuna.htm for safe levels tables and other good info.

Your dentist isn't telling you the truth. He's just saying that to reassure his clients and possibly discourage lawsuits. There's no question that mercury in dental amalgam leeches out into your system. According to the World Health Organization, dental amalgam is the main source of mercury exposure in non industrialized settings, typically contributing to body mercury levels in amounts significantly exceeding those from food and air:
http://www.who.int/water_sanitation_...rypolpaper/en/

The controversy is whether those amounts are large enough to cause ill effects. There is a lot of debate there. The Wikipedia article on this is actually pretty good and balanced:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dental_amalgam_controversy

My own dentist is a young guy who won't use mercury amalgam for a variety of reasons, including indeterminate health risk to his clients, indeterminate future lawsuit risks, and risks to his own health from mercury exposure. The Wikipedia article has some good links to studies showing mental impairment in dental professionals who use mercury amalgam.

Just get white porcelain work done. Or go for the gold, if you can afford it!
Another mercury contribution, is swordfish as well as some other long-lived open-sea game fish.
Note to self, do not work as a hatter. The felt hats are immersed in a mercury filled tank. You will become mad as a hatter!

screw mercury, I fear those NEURITE PROCESSES growing in my head...ahhhh

wait...

No..Still I need to stop those NEURITE PROCESSES from growing..those look evil man..really evil to me

and whats with the name "NEURITE PROCESSES" anyway? could they not name them something pleasant to the ear like..

"sweety fancies"

now that's a great name to me..

doctor comes in and say "your Sweety Fancies are not growing so well, we will need more tests on your brain."
then you think "oh ok that's ok.."

but when a doctor comes in and says "Dude those "NEURITE PROCESSES" are shrinking and your going to die..soon..like rite now..in fact your already dead but the NEURITE PROCESSES shrinkage has disabled the thought of death to the rest of your brain..sorry dude"
then you think "What? NEURITE PROCESSES? NOOOO"

you see my point?
