MEElectronics M6 Review
First impressions: oh my god, just how pretty do these look??? These may be the prettiest IEM’s I’ve seen, just look at them.
First audio impressions are going from a secondary listening and from memory as I had an issue with them. Mostly I remember thinking what the hell, after spending so long with its siblings these I found hard to believe where the same range, hell these have the same drivers as the M9. These are so much better. God it’s got genuinely good mids and what’s that I hear, treble, sharp crisp treble. God the clarity across the board is just so much better on these so much so I thought the others might all be broken. A replacement set confirmed that no these just are a lot better. Btw if my dealings with MEElectronics are representative of their customer service I can say they really super nice and very helpful.
I really don’t know how and why they sound so much better. I thought maybe it’s the looser seal on these and part of me still thinks this but for the life on me I couldn’t replicate the clarity of these on any of the others. These I genuinely like.
Amped / unamped: The usual small differences, not really worth the bother.
Lows: God these are a breath of fresh air after so much time with its siblings. Good deep low bass but not several tons of it. These feel so much lighter to listen to. I realise that bass junkies after their next fix might rather its siblings but this has easily the best behaved bass in the range. It’s there deep and low but no great hump of it rising toward the midbass range. Oh it’s so well behaved. I know some like that but I don’t and its my review so naa. These spank its siblings.
Mids: Mids are much cleaner on these. I really rather like these. They are borderline what some might call forward but I think they are very evenly balanced in quantity to the highs and lows. Not too dry, not too wet. The only really problem with the mids and I hate to say it but on occasion they do get a little sibilant. Normally that would bother me a lot but its mids are otherwise so pleasant I’m willing to overlook it. I’d much rather these mids than those of its stable mates.
Highs: The highs were possible the first thing I noticed about these most notably because it has them. They are so much cleaner and clearer than even the M11. They are pretty much spot on in the quantity that should be here and they are detailed nicely. What surprises me most in what a leap they are over the M9, how the hell they have the same driver I just cannot fathom. On the (granted way cheaper) M9 the highs would get a bit much on the ears but these are so much better controlled. Their relatively greater abundance never is a problem.
Soundstage: As usual for a dynamic it’s pretty good. I’d place these as better than average but nothing magical.
Comfort: Very very comfortable. They do insist you wear them over the ear so you had better like that or get used to it however it’s what I prefer so fine by me.
Fit: Well boys and girl this was a total pain in the bottom. Yes once I got them sitting right they would stay there but it was the getting there. These are the only things I’ve used with memory wires that have ever posed to be a problem for me but these killed. When I first started playing with these I was spending ages trying to get the position quite right and playing with tips. Even now whenever I put these back on it takes a minute or two to get them just so.
Microphonics: None unless you really really try. Kick ass cable.
Isolation: Its slightly less than its siblings but still enough for normal usage. Fine for on the bus, not for the tube.
Cable: Kicks ass. Simples! (UK residents will get the reference) For those outside the UK
Value: Great, easily the best of its siblings. At prices I could find its us$10 (us$20 RRP) cheaper than the iM-590 but getting dangerously close to their sound quality. I’m really not sure which of the two id take if it was my money, both have their advantages and disadvantages but on just sound alone the iM-590 do just pip them. In the UK the 590 I still don’t see available yet so its competition are Radiopaqs. These with their better cable and cable slider don’t have their microphonic issues and becomes a serious challenger to the Jazz and Classical. Just on sound the M6 looses (so would the 590) but the cable and over the ear nature really go in the M6’s favour. At us$40 they give pretty good sound for very little money.
Conclusion: in the MElectronics range these should be the only one you want to really even think about buying just on sound quality. They supposedly have the same drivers in them as the M9 but I really utterly cannot fathom how the same driver can sound so different but it does. I genuinely thought the others must have been affected by cold or something on their way to me the difference was that stark. God if this had the little black case the M9 had with them they would really start worrying the iM-590’s leg, sounds very nearly as good, has a much better cable and lets you wear over the ear which the 590 never really loved me doing. I already know of one chap who sought these out largely because of their over the ear fit which is rare in this price range. In fact I can’t think of a cheaper proper over the ear IEM. Okay so I just did, the PL-30 but I’ve never heard it.
I had been planning to do a round up post comparing all the MEElectronic IEM’s I’ve heard but I’m not going to bother because these are a clear step above the others. It really is that simple. The M11 when properly amped wasn’t a million miles away but unamped for the same money these just sound better. This is the one they need to advertise and push, it deserves it.
I like these; they are fun, cheap and sound great for the money. Oh and they look just absolutely stunning too.
