But with plans for upgrading to better phones would it be a bad thing? I only use the mx500s now because I want to use my money to buy an amp as my next purchase, after that I want to get some better phones and want the best amp I can use in a portable situation. Getting better phones that wouldn't reach their potential from the slimx right now wouldn't be too bright IMO. Would it be good to just build the basic META42 and upgrade or change it to suit the phones I switch to?

I think it would work fine, and planning ahead can't hurt.

I would just be sure that you either socket or be willing to change the gain resistors to accomodate any future phones or sources.

I tried plugging in a pair of earbuds in an amp before (cmoy), the Sony MDR-E848, and it went extremely loud. Even with the knob turned all the way down, and the amp running with a gain of 2! It didn't help that the pot had some channel imbalance, causing one channel to not attenuate fully. Anyone else have the same problem of overloading high-efficiency 'buds with amps?

If you're sure you will be able to afford the phones within a reasonable timespan, go for it. If the cost difference between a META(say, $100 w/ reasonably good parts) and a CMOY(say, $40 w/ reasonably good parts) is going to set your headphone purchase back more than a month(if you're unemployed like me and have a starving wallet), then I'd say go with a CMOY.
