Measuring Downforce on TT

Can I use any old digital scale measuring in grams to measure tonearm downforce? Or does weight not at all with down force. I'm probably way off here but I thought it might be worth a try.

It needs to be non-magnetic, so the stylus isn't sucked down onto the scale. That could throw off your results and damage the stylus. Also, you need to make sure the level of the scale is exactly that of your platter and mat.

Do you have one that fits under the arm? THat would be interesting, though stylus guages are pretty inexpensive....
