I was looking into these headphone, but I'm not too sure if my mp3 player would be able to power them. Please let me know. (I will be using these for a Creative Nomad Zen)

P.S. I don't want to use an amp.

I feel 'V-CRAPtacular' about this, but just because the Nomad Zen can power the MDR-V700DJ to very loud volume levels doesn't necessarily mean that the combo will sound good together.

Er, V700DJ with a real amp? Since he doesn't consider the V700DJ to be crappy in and of itself, anymore

mdr-v700 = NO

isolation? hrm... get mdr-v6 from sony or erp-6 canal phones

open air? hrm... get grado sr-80's or even koss porta series like the ksc-55 or porta pro

the v700 licks ballsack!

I teabag the v700

That may be true, Joe Bloggs, but the MDR-V700DJ still falls short on sound quality compared to (most) other headphones at its price point (and even to some other headphones at half its price).

In my review, I had called it 'flawed but enjoyable'. But on an absolute scale, the V700DJ is just plain mediocre.

I find with some EQ tweaks on the MDR-7509/MZ-N707 combo that it's more listenable for long durations than the 7506/V6. As some of you may know, the 7509 sounds very similar if not identical to the V700. The V700 and the 7509 do go really loud from anything I've trid them with.
But for general short-term day to day portable listening, I'd give the 7506/V6 the thumbs up over the V700 in the US (in the UK where the 7506 can cost over 50% more than the V700, the recommendation is harder). It's got a much more upfront sound, slamming bass, is lighter and smaller. With the Beyer pads fitted, you'd look slightly stranger but it's more comfortable.
As for other closed alternatives, the HD280 looks a bit odd and lacks punch/bass with portables, and the DT250-80 is comparatively impractical for portable use. The D66 Eggos sound very balanced and good, but they don't seal out as much outside noise as all of the above.
