I am still in search of a good all around pair of buds to use with my SL-CT790. I won't be using an amp and the player defaults to having the S-XBS on (just the opposite from the Sony pcdp's). Would the 888LP's be a good choice for me? I have gathered from the head-fi boards that they are very "warm" sounding and are a little bass-shy and don't have an extreme high end to them. I'm thinking this might be a good pairing for the SL-CT790, especially with the (gasp!) S-XBS engaged. I'll be listening to alot of rock (Our Lady Peace, Rollins Band, Marvelous 3) and some rap (Eminem) with these buds on the go... I've already got a set of semi-closed cans (7505's) as well as open ones (Porta and Sportapros).

So would they be worth plunking down $50 plus a few bucks shipping for them?

For your music taste, I think you would enjoy the Koss Ksc-35 over the mdr-e888. The koss has more impactful bass(great for rock) and the mdr-e888 is alittle too mild sounding for it.
The koss is a clip-on model though..
Ksc-35 can be had for around $20.

I would second that. I used the 888's for some time and always rated them as good headphones. Since getting the KSC-35's though I rarely listen to the 888's and find them somewhat lacking in the bass.

that's great, but I already have the portapros and sportapros, I was asking for advice on which earbuds to go with... and the bass boost will be on the pcdp so that should help with the 888's "shy" low end...

There good headphones, I have them. I'd listen to them more but they are too large to fit comfortably in my ear hole. They hurt like crazy after about 30 minutes. If they fit you right I guess they are worth the money. They take a little positioning in your ear also. Depending on the angle they may or may not have a lot of bass or the treble may be recessed. Those kinds of things. But, overall sound character is good, especially for a bud.

I would go against everyone here, I prefer the E888 to KSC35. To me, KSC-35 has too much bass impact (may be great for you, since you will be using these for Rock) and sometimes sound muddy to me. On the other hands, E888 is a bit low on bass, while all else are very good. E888 sounds quite good on my D-303, and Sharp MD-SS323. The 888 also have better details and clarity to the KSC35.

Got the 888's. Don't really like them all that much.

Yes, there's a lot of other discussion from the meet, but many people were impressed in direct comparison of Koss 35s to Grado SR40s... and these were mainly folks who were Koss fans prior to trying the Grados.

Just another option to consider even though they aren't ear buds.

I know all about the KSC-35's-- but I"M NOT looking for that style-- I'm looking for earbud recommendations as I said in my first post... I may have to take the plunge and try the 888's out... maybe someone has a used pair they are willing to sell me?

Have you considered the Senn MX500s ? At less than $20 they're a good sounding alternative... Good luck !

I tried e-mailing and apparently he doesn't have anymore in stock..

But as for the sennheiser mx500, what sounds better and provides the better comfort: the MX500 or the KSC-50 (since i can't find KSC-35s anymore)?

Sorry, can't help you there. The 500s sounded very good when seated properly, but I just don't get on with buds. They never sit right and always fall out. And I never heard the 50s, though they should be somewhat similar to the 35s. I think they sport the same drivers, someone please correct me if I'm wrong. The enclosures are different at any rate so they will sound different.
