Howdy folks,

I want to build a HT system.

I'm thinking of buying this Velodyne Subwoofer DSP-12B

For $300 Canadian, no shipping, it's one of the best prices I can find in my area (I think).

I've read it has tight base and not too boomy, which is what I want.

There's also a Klipsch Synergy Sub-10 on sale for $200, but I hear they're a little boomy.

Any suggestions in what I should be looking for in satellite speakers that might match up?

I was looking at Polk Audio HT RM10 for $280, but not sure if they'll underporform in front of the sub.

Willing to spend a bit more to make a nice system.

My room is 13 x 14.5 x 8.5 high, with 3 large arched open doorways.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, I"m an audio and HT noob.

The number 1 problem with sub performance is poor sub placement and room acoustics. Some complaints of boominess in subs can be solved by properly positioning the sub till you get a flatter bass response. Also, your room dimensions are not very ideal due to the room being almost square....this has an effect on the room modes. The open doorways may alleviate this problem and addition of corner bass traps. But then you'll have the issue of having a big enough sub to pressurize the room without pushing the sub too hard.

update on my situation:

I found a good deal so I purchased the following:

Yamaha receiver 6140B
4x Energy C-50
1x Energy C-C50 center
1x Energy ESW-8 sub

Setting it up today but I"m still not sure the 8inch sub will perform the way I want it to. I have no other experience to compare it to, so I will have to wait and see.

However since FS has a good return policy, I may still audition the Velodyne DPS-12 in my HT (and can move the ESW-8 to my computer room).

Am I correct that this is a great sub for $300 CAD? I know there's some great subs from websites in the States, but shipping & currency exchange kills the deal. And subs are overpriced in my area.

Anyone else have suggestions on this set up?

Thanks
