We are monitoring massive Distributed Denial of Service attacks all over the U.S. tonight starting at around 11:30 PM CST. As many as 5 of the 13 root nameserver have been down, up to 10 with massive packet loss (xx%)

this is affecting some sites and not some... to name a few... Anandtech and Clubsi are down. most of the other sites i frequent are fine however.

http://www.internethealthreport.com/ <--- shows you the effect on the bigtime servers and networks.

just so you know why some of your sites aren't working. and probably wont be working for at least a few hours.

wow, so did I. A bunch of sites weren't working for me and everything's acting funny. Must be why.

the reason you are unable to access some sites or some sites are slow is because of the packet loss by the servers.

if the servers don't give you all the packets your browser waits for all of them... which could be a while depending on the backbone that server is connected to.

I wonder if the University of Washington is fubared because of this. Me and my roommate's Internet has been messed up for a few hours, dropping as low as 300 kbps, and shooting as high as 18327kbps. Normally we pull about 6000 kbps.

It's all over my head. Worms and denial of service etc.

The only explanation I can come up with in my paranoid little mind is foreign attack by either the Iraq or the Korean military

Could be the China miitary since I read that they have been working on plans to attack the US in this way.

Everybody head for your bomb shelters

Oh and don't forget to take your guns with you.

I gotta go now, I just heard a plane fly over and I think it was a crop duster. Probably full of some awful chemical agent that will kill me.
Good Luck all..............and as chadbang would say "HAIL SATAN"

A denial of service attack is one where someone with malicious intent sets up many computers to quickly query servers. The servers try as hard as they can to keep up and serve their information(web sites, etc). This attack, unfortunatly, makes it almost impossible for regular internet users to get information from the server.

Is the DDOS attack still going? I haven't had any trouble accessing pages...

That would explain the very long wait times before pages load.

It doesn't sound like a legitimite DDoS attempt to me, I think it looks more like some "u|33|2 1337 |-|4x0|2" who didn't expect his little program to work as well as it did.

It says something about the quality of my ISP that I've not noticed anything at all! Go 2alpha!

(and I've been using my computer both this morning and last night at around 1:00AM, when the Slashdot comments started all talking about the worm...)
