After receiving my HD6XX last December I compared them to my HD650's. I discovered that the 650's were in need of new ear pads. I swapped my brand new HD6XX pads onto the 650's and it freshened up the sound. Instead of getting the stock Sennheiser pads for my 650's I decided to give the Dekoni Elite Velours a try. I can confirm that these pads increased the bass as well as making the soundstage slightly more forward. The change was not majorly so but enough to audibly distinguish them from my HD6XX.

I joined the HD58X drop back in mid February and there was a lot discussion on the Massdrop site about the lack of bass that the early reviewers commented on. I commented myself that anyone concerned about a lack of bass could consider the Dekoni pads as a way to increase the bass. Of course, as we all know, the 58X was re-tuned in order to increase the bass. From what I have been reading it sounds like there is more than enough bass due to this re-tuning. I haven't received my 58X yet (hopefully next week) so I'll assess whether or not Dekoni pads are even necessary. I suspect that they won't be required though.

@TheCatnipMouse - the capsule foam is indeed very interesting and unexpected. Does it influence the sound? I just did a quick hands covering outside of drivers, and it really didn't affect the sound like it does on the other open headphones I've had. Kind of odd really.

I think they look a little nicer than the photos I've seen show.

First impression (Tool - Lateralus - The Grudge) - Nice highs. Very detailed sounding. My normal headphone is a Mahogany THX-00. Of course the bass is no where close, but still sounds "right". Reminds me of a good home speaker. I've always felt like the 600 series sounded the most like speakers (minus a sub-woofer). I'm pleased with them, especially for $150. A refreshing value in today's headphone market.

Oddly I found the newest version of the HD 650 the least veiled of the modern HD 6xx Senns some reason, I had some veil issues with the HD 660 S and the HD 600. Interestingly when I mod the HD 650 to help reduce the bass distortion it starts sounding more like my DT 880. I ended up preferring them stock as if I mod or change the cables they start losing what I like about them.

No worries. It is good to give something back to this community. I have been lurking here for about 10 years but only joined last year.

I agree. I'm pleased with mine. It was nice to not get stung too badly on import duties. All in it was about £135 ish to my door.

The foam definitely makes a difference, how much will depend on your head and your ears. Try taking the foam out on one side and listen to something in mono. That will give you the best idea. It will take a minute to remove is damage free and reversible.

Lateralus is an awesome album. Do you like the new APC album? I have been listening to it daily since release.

Just to steal one of your images from that post....looks like the current 650 and 58X share the same, or similar one piece magnet than the older two piece design and I'm assuming they're all using neodymium magnets.

    Cool, interesting.

As you can see I chickened out from the no grille approach when I realised that I liked them a lot post mods.

The new APC just hasn't really sunk in deep for me yet. I like it, but it doesn't call out to me. Some of MJK's best vocal work though. I'm sure I will grow to love it.

I noticed that the foam is the same size and thickness (and seemingly the same foam) as sold by Sennheiser for underneath the earpads on the HD600/650. The part number is 049789, if anyone wanted to get some to try with their other headphones.

I happened to have some that I previously ordered from Sennheisers.

    Gotta catch em all!

Each pair is stock. The 580 is a later model and was basically NIB when I got it earlier this year. Just had to replace the headband padding. The 580 Jubilee's look almost unused with the pads/headband cushions recently replaced. 600/650 are the most recent revisions.

I don’t know why it says that as I ordered them on Feb 15, 2018.

Does the headband of the 58X match in color to the 660S? I am curious if you can swap out the matte black trim ring (half moon around the bottom of the capsule) with the 660S to have an all gloss black ring around the capsule.

I'd go the other way - I'd like for them to be all black matte. No fingerprints.
