I have an older Marantz CD-67SE CDP that I bought secondhand and have kept in great condition for several years. Sound quality is smooth and detailed going from the analog outputs to my S.E.X. amp or Dared MP-5 clone, and the headphone output is loud enough to drive my Beyers and Grados with ease.
I've recently been looking at newer Marantz players, with my thinking that a) they will be able to play RW discs, which I sometimes would like to use but cannot with the 67SE, b) they will have newer DACS and HDAM buffers, and thus, possibly better sound quality, and c) they decode MP3 natively. In terms of the latter, I'll admit that I don't use MP3's all that much for critical listening, but if/when I purchase stuff on Amazon MP3, it's nice to dump a whole bunch of albums on one disc as opposed to decoding the files and burning them to several. Also, on some material, I'm having a harder time telling apart LAME -V0 or preset insane files from the originals as I age, unless I'm concentrating on it.
Has anybody directly compared the new CD5003 with Marantz's older players? Would it be worth springing for a new Marantz, or should I not bother? If I could get that same Marantz sound signature and the benefits of a new player that decodes MP3 and CD-RW discs, I might be tempted.....
(I also own an Apple TV but am not a fan of the analog outs - the coupling caps are too small, which leads to bass rolloff compared to my CDP. I also notice more hiss and less detail. Additionally, I also have an iPhone and Harman-Kardon DVD player that plays SACD's, but none of these sounds as clear, noise-free, and articulate as the CD-67SE).
