got an er4 a few days ago, it's the er4p btw. I haven't had time to build the impedance boost adapter but I still amp the phone....man they sound really sweet. I'm actually hearing some details that could barely be heard on the hd650, not that the details aren't on the 650, but just less prominent than the er4. e.g. I can hear audiences' chit chatting in some live records but not really apparent on the 650.

it's truely an "in ear monitor", when listening to the test track "Ask me now - The ulimate demonstaration disk" posted on head-fi some time ago by someone...I could spot some tone going "out"

which I have never realised before.

the sound stage on er4 is really fantastic

I really love this phone.....what should I try next? anything that sounds as good but with a little more bass?

btw, the phone sticks out too damn much, gonna have problems when weating toque during winter....why did they design it this way anyway

man nice to hear you like them. I swear that the ER4 is the best IEM under $200. I also have the UM2 and I love it for dnb.

Hehe yes I love my Etys, too
smily_headphones1.gif

I too bought the ER-4P in the first place - but I got the ER-4P->ER-4S conversion cable in addition (I guess that's what you mean by "impedance boost adapter"?) and I'd say I love the ER-4S more than the ER-4P. As you own the SR-71 already I'd say get that conversion cable or build one yourself! Your benefit of amping the ER-4S will be greater than amping your ER-4P. With my setup I couldn't stand the slight hiss on my ER-4P (even through my silent SuperMacro v3) once I got used to the dead silent SMv3 + ER-4S combo.
You'll notice the difference between those "two" phones pretty fast I guess.

You say your Etys stick out too far? I know that they aren't the most beautiful phones but it may be that you simply inserted them in a slightly wrong way. On my first day with them I had them sticking out pretty far and looked like Frankenstein! Actually there was a thread on headfi, which I can't seem to find right now, which had pictures of the "correct" fit. Though all ear canals are different I had the best results when I shoved them a little bit up the canals so that the cables won't show away from your head (in angle of about 45°) but straight down. Damn it *g* pictures should give you a better idea - once I found the thread I'll post it here. Maybe someone else remembers the said thread.

Hm, my next step was to order the UE-10 Pro. They should arrive soon - damn I'm so nervous right now *g*.

Ciao,
Marcus

yeah I'll be making the p-s adapter. I've got the stuff but don't really have time just yet (i know it only take a few mins to get it done...but oh well)

they do stick out alot more than any other IEMs, the whole faomy is in my ear, the tip of the barrel is just right @ my canal entrance, can't go any deeper. No, it's not an insertion error
biggrin.gif
i know how to wear these things and I don't shove them all the way in till it get stuck in the canal

dude, I can't be spending 900bucks on an IEM man

Have you tried th E4c? I used to have the ER4p also and a P to S cable. I liked the very nice detail, but the new E4c's have much better bass to my ears. A little mid and high detail is lost, but overall I like the sound better. Much less analytical. Now with the E4c Instead of just listening to the music, I actually feel more a part of the music

Personally I think the soundstage on the ER4 is one of the worst among IEMs, it all comes from the middle of your head, dual driver IEMs gives much better soundstage. I'm not a big fan of the fake-detail ( harmonic distortion ) ety sound. But if you like the ety sound and want more bass, there's been posts about a new Altec lansing IEM which is basically the same as the ety but with a bass boost switch built in.

Ahhh, Ety love

My ear canals angle up at about 45 degrees. With the right orientation the cable strain boots point straight down and exit out that little v at the bottom of the ear. In fact, that is what limits insertion depth for me.

You must try a P to S adapter. A quick fix is the Oehlbach 120 ohm adapter that comes with the PortaCorda, although it overshoots a little bit. Even quicker and easier is the RS in line volume control, which is just a variable resistor. Basically dial-a-treble when used with single armature canal phones.

I have been using my ER4P with the shure clear flex sleeves. They tend to beef up the bass adding both quantity and impace. It also slightly tames the highs. They also increase the soundstage. I can hear so much detail!! They sound great with my ER4Ps.

What?! I've been thinking about the adapter to change my ER4p's to an "S", but didn't want to spend the cash for the "official" Ety one.
Where do you set this RS dial to to equal the official one? I must get one. How do you use it to the best effect?!?
Does it do more harm than good to the sound, not being a real "audiophile approved" device?

Anyway, thanks for the tip!

yeah the phone is just fantastic, the only time when they sound like crap is when it's shoved too damn deep into the canal. things sound very thin, bass is almost non-existent...I've always used the foamies as the benchmark for the depth of insetion. My conclusion is that, when using the tri-flange, the thrid flange should not go into my ear completely but lightly touching the entrance of my canal and the barrel should not go into my canal. if it goes any deeper...they sound like crap...literally. Same experience with the er6. but im sure everybody has different methods

the er4 is upfront, so much more than my 650, but no way it's sound stage sux, you probably shove them too deep there exkgb.

damn guys, stop tempting to get the adapter done

you can make your own. You just need a stereo female jack and stereo male plug and two 75 ohm precision resistors for each channel. Also you can use the RS inline volume dial and set it so that the resistance is 75 ohms. I don't like the RS volume thing because it really degrades the audio for whatever reason.

Lol - I thought the same way one year ago
biggrin.gif

Considering your equipment I'd say you've spent that money elsewhere.
Two hours of commuting everyday finally convinced me to go the IEM route anyways. Instead of spending my money on a car I'd rather sit in the train or bus and be in music heaven every morning and every afternoon

Well, everybody has different ear canals. I finally found my personal best fit that way.

very true! you are taunting me aren't you? I'm not getting the UE10pro

I'm still pretty concern about their durability and lifespan, read many cases where cats ate the phone, accidentally tugged the cable and the whole driver came off...and etc. Makes me don't wanna spend too much on IEMs.

You know, the er4 impressed me much more than the hd650. It gives me the feeling that it's truely worth what it cost or perhaps more, but I thought the hd650 should be much better than what it's suppose to be.
