Which is the most beautiful male/ female voice combination you know of? I am listening right now to Lizz Wright, "Speak Your Heart", with Marc Thompson's bass in the background, and the combination just sends tingles down my spine. But also Alison Krauss and Robert Plant ... and in quite another direction: Yoshikazu Mera and Edita Gruberova.

So, what are your favourites?

PJ Harvey and Nick Cave rank right up there for me.

Everything from Slowdive (Neil Halstead + Rachel Goswell) & Dean & Britta (Dean Wareham + Britta Phillips) to Draconian (Anders Jacobsson + Lisa Johansson) & Epica (Simone Simons + Mark Jansen).

It's far from best, but as a personal favorite the only duo I can remember making me tear up was John Doe & Exene Cervenka's off-kilter harmonies on See How We Are (off X's acoustic Unclogged) on an old Grundig tube table-top, several Christmas mornings ago.

If I had to pick one other it would be about half the unusual pairings (various artists) on John Prine's In Spite of Ourselves.

So glad to hear that somebody else out there digs this record; it's a personal fave. And because Emmylou Harris is one of Prine's duet partners, I'm also reminded of her work with Gram Parsons on Grievous Angel.

Of course, there're others that haven't been mentioned:

Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell/Kim Weston

Jackie Cain and Roy Kral

Paul Hillier and the Hilliard Ensemble (Arvo Pärt's records, among others)

The Mamas and the Papas

The Consolers (husband-and-wife gospel duo my grandmother couldn't get enough of)

The Digable Planets

Sly and The Family Stone

I'll bet there's a ton of fantastic country music that escapes me right now.
