I love my HP-1s. Far and away the best purchase I have made in headphones, IMO. Perfectly neutral, and a killer combination with my EHHA amp and Parasound D/AC 1100 HD. My only problem with them is that I have had a couple of ear surgeries and, as a result, on-ear headphone pads can be painful for me. So, now I am considering having Headphile Larry transform my HP-1s to a Vixen.

What do you guys think, and why? Thanks in advance for the input.

Dont do it.

Very little of what Larry does can be undone. Sure its fun to experiment, but should anyone experiment with a headphone (Im assuming they are in good functional condition) that is becoming harder to find? Nobody likes to talk about it, but the endless stream of HP-1000 drivers for larry's old headphone work came from SR-100/200.... Until recently SR-100/200 sold cheap as dirt on ebay regardless of what drivers they had.

I guess I cant speak for larry's work but in my own experience putting Grado drivers into a Beyer frame has DRASTIC effects on the sound. Only 1 person out of perahps a dozen through the years guessed that my SR-125/DT-770 hybrid was even a grado. The bottom line is that nobody can really say beforehand what custom mod work on headphones will really do with any certainty unless they have built *exactly* that. Everything he makes is unique, and as such sounds unique & different. Good stuff if you want to experiment, I would most highly advocate trying other headphones than the HP-1000, BUT do you want to experiment with headphones that would be prohibitively expensive to replace?

Get the C-pads if you just want a more comfy ride. I dont know how much you have experimented with bending the headband and locking the cups into place but thats worth trying too.

How about the distancer + GS 1000 pads like the MS-1000/MS-Ultimate mod?

HP-1 000 000 anyone?

Far beyond my personal abilities. I'm no DIYer.

I would not do it, don't even think about it

As the other said, get some different pads for them. Have you tried C-pads at all? They might be a good way to start.

$1400? AFAIK that would be an absolute steal on HP-1000s. On ebay they have been like $2400 and on here recently they sold for $1700 I think it was, with most of the text smudged off on one of the cups.

Sounds like the best solution to me!

Seriously, rather than take a chance turning these headphones into something no one wants, it's better to either keep them as is or sell them as is IMO.

Ah, I didn't see HP1. But HP2s go for somewhere around 1.4k don't they?
