A protein (unique in its construction) is thought to have a key role in hearing. (Full article.)

It is called TRPA1 (pronounced 'trip-ay-one') and forms a "trap door" that is tugged open when a passing sound makes the hair bundle tilt, allowing charged atoms to flood into the hair cell.

This marks the beginning of an electrical signal that tells the brain about the pitch, volume and duration of a sound.

Nice...I recall learning about this "trapdoor" model several years ago. Great to read that these guys have finally characterised the protein
