Amazing number of choices to choose from, this is my expanded list from long Mahler thread of my favorite M5s:

1)Bernstein/VPO/DG
2)Sinopoli/DG
3)Gatti/Musical Heritage
4)Kondrashin/Melodiya
5)Barshai/Brilliant
6)Kubelik/Audite

Interesting to see Sinopoli getting so many nods. I should definitely refresh my memory of his 5th since I don't recall being overtly impressed- although it was quite good- with his interpretation. There are a numerous recordings of the 5th worth listening to (Barbirolli, Chailly, Kubelik, Abbado, Barshai), but Lenny's DG recording with VPO is truly special.

OK, I have most of these others, but Karajan is the only one that truly is gut-wrenching, particularly in that incredible first movement. No love from anyone else for this version?

The Sinopoli M5 is really special and best performance of his complete set, it is sold in 2CD set with M1 but the M1 is nowhere near as fine a performance. I fell in love with the M5 the moment I heard it.........and it has since remained in my top 5 list of M5s, it is a wild ride with Sinopoli!

HVK should be taken seriously in Mahler, even though we only have 4,5,6,9 recordings available. Most will agree his M9 is his best Mahler and I will usually place his live version in my top list. Next best for me is his M6 although it is more restrained than my favorite versions, then M5 then his M4 which really gets lost in a crowded field and for HVK fans only.

I must admit I have not listened to Karajan's M5 for some time now......perhaps it is better then I remembered.
