Hey guys,

I had two headphones that I am considering modding because I dont like the sound that comes out of them, but really like the looks of. These would be the Vmoda Crossfade LP and the Sony ZX700. With that in mind, Does anyone have any recommendations about which driver might be better in those types of housings? The Magnums were meant for open-backed Grados, and the T50rp driver is a planar magnetic driver.

Suggestions for other cheap drivers would also be welcome!

T50RP drivers. They respond better to mods than any other driver I know of. Check out this transplant by @Armaegis

How about just modding a T50RP in it's own housing? You don't have to keep it looking stock, you can get creative.

WOW. Is that a custom paint job? I do like the idea of modding a T50RP, but I have my eyes on the Alpha Primes and if I end up modding a T50RP itself I might not have a need for the Alphas anymore. It might be too much of an overlap.

I also read on the Grado mod thread that the Magnums offer SQ and Detail that is on par with the HD800s on the cheap. I find that to be a very attractive premise. The only thing that is holding me back is:

1. I have never heard a Grado before
2. I havent read anything about the Magnums's performance in a closed housing
3. The T50RP driver is huuuge and requires lots of dremel work.. and that means I need to buy a dremel. xD

That being said, yours is gorgeous!

I just went and looked at a few graphs from Innerfidelity of a couple of different Grados that have been sent in to Tyll, and I dont think I like what I saw. Every single Grado had significant distortion below 100hz as well as a huge roll off on the low end. I like my bass linear, and these Grado measurements have what seems to be a midbass emphasis (relative to their midrange and sub bass). Tyll did not have any measurements of the Magnum V6, but he had a few of the V2.5, V3. V4 drivers and they all seem fairly similar in that regard. Distorted and rolled off bass is a no go. I think the Magnums are going to be a no-go for now.

Can anyone suggest any other drivers that are transplant- friendly? Bonus points for drivers that I can buy al a carte!

I believe I have some Audio Technica AD700 drivers that haven't been used ever laying around. I moved a month ago and they're packed away somewhere. If you are interested I'll look for them. PM about a price, it won't be high.
