what do you guys think about this movie, it has become one of my all time favorites. it took me a few watches to let it all sink in, it is a multi-layered movie, there is a lot to look at and listen to so I think it is one of those that needs several viewings to soak it all in.

Magnolia was a decent film that tried too hard to be profound, and ended up cumbersome. A for effort, but it just was an intelligent film in the same way that Fight Club is a counter-culture film.

Yeah, I definitely felt the same way about this movie. Never really liked it all that much even though I've now watched it three times. It was entertaining and some of the characters were quite well fleshed out in the film, so to speak, but the way the director bent over backwards to tie everything in together and tried to make that profound common thread theme work ended up being too trite.

Regarding "Magnolia", isn`t Beth Gibbons of Portishead that plays that suicidal girl the policeman gets involved with? Yeah, I liked the movie.

Of the stuff I saw recenlty, I enjoyed "Buggie Nights" and "Black Hawk Down" was a real let down.

I really enjoyed the film and thought it was an emotionally intense trip. There were some emmensely affecting moments (I got a kick out of that scene where everyone breaks out in the same song). I felt some of the characters, however, had their parts pitched too high, like the abused daughter and Julianne Moore's character. Quite a bit of shrieking going on there. I also found the substory of the policeman looking for love dragged somewhat. But those points were overshadowed by the great story between Jason Robards (that dying man's rant was brilliant) and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Cruise's bit was great (why do I feel I really got to know a side of Tom Cruise?) and so was Willam H Macy's story. The little boy on the game show and Philip Baker Hall (he should have gotten a f-ing nomination for that part) were really wonderful. Okay... did the film hold together? The first time I watched it, I watched it in two part and I think that break really might have helped. I really wanted to get back to finishing it, and when I did - I really loved the film. It was during my next viewing that I thought the film might be somewhat overwrought. But I also think the theme of "coincidence" really did'nt hold water. That certainly could have been tied up a lot neater. Did the character's paths every really cross at the finish? Not really. And I dug the frogs, but, come on, what DID that mean? Someone enlighten me.

Now "Boogie Nights" that was a masterpiece. One of the best films in the last 20 years. Reminded me so much of Robert Altman at his peak. That film immediately convinced me that Paul Anderson is going to be one of the great ones.

I really enjoyed the film. It definitely is something that you have to be in the mood for. It is a long emotionally taxing experience.

The thing I loved most about the movie was the character developement. All the characters seemed real to me and that they were someone who could exist in the real world. The people had their faults and failures. They also had good characteristics about them as well as individual triumphs. Anger and love were both treated wonderfully. I fealt like I got to know the characters and that I got on insight into their lives. I loved seeing them progress and grow and change during the movie, and I felt sucked into the situations.

I love how all their lives intersected as well, both large and small. It was a very interesting take on what is a true aspect of daily life. Our lives do interconnect with one another. Of course it really isn't to the extent that the movie does.

the frog scene was a bit wierd and out of place, but interesting nonetheless. I just don't understand it, but I don't feel that it detracted from the movie in any way.

i believe the only thing she's ever acted in is portishead' short film "to kill a dead man."

they do look fairly similar, so i could see how you'd think it was her. beth is hotter though.

miroslav, the girl that plays claudia gator is melora walters.

dohminator, I agree totally, you have to be ready for a long and emotionally draining movie. If you want everything wrapped up in a nice tight box forget it!

I watch this movie when I feel down, it actually makes me feel like my life isn't so screwed up afterwords.......

Uh, my apologies to Melora....and Beth.

The thing is I already persuaded couple of friends of mine it really was Beth G. acting in that movie.

Gotta play some Portishead today anyway. I read somewhere Beth had a new album where she features some dude, but the guy who reviewed the album wasn`t too excited about it.
