Don't get scared away by a DAC, that isn't a requirement for anything at all.
 
Basically what we are all saying is that,  there is another level of dynamics
that can be achieved with Maddogs (and likely orthos in general), these are
for want of a better world "scalable" the more you throw at them, the better the SQ. 
 
This isn't a volume thing.  Its about moving the large ortho driver.
 
The Schiit Lyr with the Maddogs, outstanding combo, this can achieve a dangerous
level of sound pressure at about 3 or 4 o clock position.
 
I get excellent and responsive sound from a Tralucent T1 portable, anything of 
similar power will do, albeit I can max the volume and want more...
 
You will be fine with whatever you want to use, the more the better though.
 
You don't need a dac.  I assure you there will be an amp/dac combo
for sale trade on the forums at some point.  Save cash for a month or two.

Has anyone tried Mad Dogs with an ALO National? Is it up to the task? I need a portable rig - source is an ipod classic.

I have. It's quite good for my taste. But it sounded best if you put a CLAS in between.

I auditioned it once. Very nice portable amp. It will do nicely.

They certainly do sound incredible!  Really loving my pair!

 

-> As far as a portable rig I use the JDS 421 and they sound great on that, but at high volumes the bass distorts slightly and that doesn't happen with the LYR which has the headroom to push the bass further.  Ofcourse there's almost no reason ever to push it as much as I did with the 421.

I honestly dont know much about this stuff, personally i wanna get the fiio E10 since its apparently pretty decent and its not too expensive, would that just be a waste of money though?

IMO the e10 with the MD is essentially a waste. The MD is not an easy to drive ortho. You need a decent desktop amp.

Dang, so do you need a dac to drive them off a desktop or is that just to enhance it more?

I would start with a decent desktop amp if that's what your budget allows for. I think that a decent starting point is something like the e09k by fiio. Then add a dac such as the odac when you have the budget. There are lots of alternatives of course and many of them can be had right in the used forums here for good prices. Audio GD makes good stuff.
