Not only is this their best album (an interesting feat considering its their latest) but the more I listen to it, the more I realize that this is actually a masterpiece of a metal album. Easily up there with Master of Puppets, Reign in Blood, Number of the Beast, etc.

If you have not listened to it, and are a metal / hard rock fan, you do yourself a GREAT disservice by not listening to it. There is no 'filler' songs on this album. I listen to it straight through from beginning to end without ever hitting Next Track button.

I do however sometimes hit the Prev Track to listen to the song again.. songs worthy of mention (Halo, Aesthetics of Hate, Now I lay thee down, Clenching the fists of dissent,) you know what? they're all worthy of note..

A true metal masterpiece.

Wow, I haven't listened to Machine Head in about a decade.

I'll have to check this out. Thanks!

I used to be into them before but it kind of passed as they had a few good songs and some 'meh' ones... but the addition of Phil Demmel was, without a doubt, a great move by the band and The Blackening is the first album in which he was a part of from beginning to end.

Also, if anyone has Rock Band (either 1 or 2) the Aesthetics of Hate song is available for download and is damn fun to play. The solo almost brought me to tears (yeah I know)

Couldn't disagree more!

First time I listened to this album I knew it was something special. The first track I heard was Beautiful Mourning. Straight up, in your face, amazing constructed Metal.

I have the Special Edition sitting right next to me. Amazing!

I just sampled a wee bit of this album on iTunes. It sounds promising. I guess I will have to get it. A couple songs smacked of the "Shadows Fall" sound. Anyone else hear this?
What's up with the Special Edition mattcalf?

It is a GREAT album indeed... I just don't know if it is a masterpiece. I think that masterpieces are usually not born, they become masterpieces through time, that's the main test.

I got the album today and it is fan-friggin-tastic! Very well recorded and the music is top notch. I don't care for their religious view points on a song or two but the emotion and power on this album is phenomenal. Powerful and masterful. Haven't watched my DVD yet...should be great too...
