I am looking to hook up a mac mini to a music fidelity DAC.

I understand USB convertors such as the transit are bit perfect but will introduce jitter.

I have found various ani-jiter devices to insert to remove the jitter.

But now I am wondering about the output of the USD-toslink convertor - they all seem to be 48khz whereas CD is 44.1khz - am I losing quality on the conversion? How can it be "bit perfect" if it up samples to 48khz? are there any USB soundcards that keep the signal at 44.1khz (without sampling up to 48 and then back again)

Should I care about this????

I stream audio from my Powerbook G4 using an Airport Express. The Airport Express goes through a Monarchy 48/96 to reduce jitter and then to the Grace m902, which I use as a DAC. I have noticed a big difference using the Monarchy. I recommend looking into something to go between your Mac and the Musical Fidelity.

Thanks - I was planning to put a monarchy DIP between the mac and the DAC but was having trouble deciding which one. I guess it would be best if my DAC did the upsampling and the DIP just reclocked to remove jitter.

From Monarchy's website that the DIP 48/96 is designed for upsampling and the 24/96 is the one that doesn't up sample.

It seems that the 24/96 might accepts all inputs - and is called 24/96 just because that's the maximum it can take? - but their website is not completely explicit about it - does anyone know for certain whether I can pass 48khz through the DIP 24/96 unchanged - and if I can get the output from the mac to 44.1 khz pass that through unchanged?

Thanks...

Apologies for a minor thread hijack... can anyone suggest a USB-digital coax device, preferably cheap, also for a Mac Mini? It'll be running into a Mission Dac 5.

Cathat, what do you think of your Mini? I love mine! And I was a hardened PC user too....
