Hi,

I've read many M50x reviews. The reviews are awesome but there are some that says the sound stage is very closed.

Is there any substitute for this headphone? I'm looking for my first audiophile headphone. Currently I'm listening my songs on Plantronics Backbeat Sense.

Budget: 70-140 dollars
Player: Fiio X1-ii

Thank you

Expanding upon what's been asked, open backed headphones will leak sound in and out, but if you use them in a quiet location they'll be amazing in comparison. They typically have a much better Soundstage in general and likely a more natural sound. IMO open headphones are simply better than closed headphones in terms of sound

Probably best if you don't then.

If your only priority is soundstage, then I'd your best bet would probably be the DT 770 then, though they're $149, slightly above your price range.

How I wished the price is still slightly different after currency conversion lol... I've thought of DT770 but mostly it's so out of my budget here in Malaysia. Or should I just go with M50x?

Well if your asking for my recommendation... I'd go with the M40X over the M50X. But as usual, YMMV.

+1 for the M40x. It seems to be more loved and less polarizing

Oh btw, how about Shure 440?

Those are a great pair of headphones, I even used to own a pair, but honestly, comfort is terrible, coiled cable is extremely annoying and they don't have much better sound stage than the M40X. I would go for the M40X instead just for the convenience factor.

Another vote for the M40x. It has less overwhelming bass than the M50x. (Which can be fixed with EQ, of course, but that requires effort and a bit of skill.)

If you can find a Yamaha HPH-MT220 within your budget, that one's even better, but it was discontinued and you may have to get it from Amazon.co.uk.

I will also mention that the Koss KTXPRO1 sounds far better to me than any closed-back under $400 despite costing under $20, but it's semi-open.

I am going to counter vote.. for the M50X's over the M40X's ... too me the M50's are more sturdy and sound better and the earcups are bigger the 40's are basically on ears for my somewhat large head / ears..

The M50X's isolate well and sound quite good (if you like a "fun" v-shaped sound and I do)... my M50X's are my default travel / out and about headphones..

for me comfort rules out the M40X's earcups are too small for my ears.

Thank you for the suggestions. I just bought m40x and loving it so far. Maybe need to change the pad cos it's so hard lol. Will target on DT770 for an upgrade in the future.
