M-Audio Transit - what is it and can I use it?

What exactly does this unit do? I have two pcdp's that have optical line out, and I'd like to be able to feed the digital optical signal to some sort of DAC and then back out to my amp. I had an ART DI/O, but would prefer something that I can just run a digital optical cable into (with 1/8" size tip) and then back out to the amp using a standard mini-mini. Can the M-Audio Transit do that?
